Als Rudolf Steiner im Jahre 1904 die Erstausgabe seines Werkes Theosophie präsentierte, war ihm wohl noch nicht klar, dass er ab 1913 diesen Begriff durch den noch heute gültigen Terminus der "Anthroposophie" ersetzen würde. In der Schrift Theosophie, die eine äußerst erfolgreiche Publikation wurde, präsentierte er zum ersten Mal seinen Ansatz, dass die Theosophie eine wissenschaftliche Erforschung der geistigen Welt darstelle, die tatsächlich aus drei Welten bestehe: Seelenwelt, Geisterland und physische Welt.
