May 1992, and after four LAPD officers were acquitted after the savage beating of Rodney King, Los Angeles is ablaze. As looting and burning take over the city, law and order are swept away in a tidal wave of violence. But under threat of their lives, homicide detectives like Harry Bosch are still stubbornly trying to do their job. In tough times, crime is one of the few things that still pay, but if defence attorney Mickey Haller was expecting an uptick in business during the economic downturn, the reality is a different story. Even people needing legal representation to keep them out of jail have to make cut-backs, it seems.

When Mickey Haller is invited by the Los Angeles County District Attorney to prosecute a case for him, he knows something strange is going on. Mickey's a defense lawyer, one of the best in the business, and to switch sides like this would be akin to asking a fox to guard the hen-house. But the high-profile case of Jason Jessup, a convicted child-killer who spent almost 25 years on death row before DNA evidence freed him, is an intriguing one.

Publisher's Summary
Only Harry Bosch can uncover LA's darkest secrets in this new gripping thriller from global best seller Michael Connelly. Read by Titus Welliver, star of Bosch.
'What do you want me to do?' Bosch asked again.
'I want you to find someone for me,' Vance said. 'Someone who might not have ever existed.'
Harry Bosch is working as a part-time detective in the town of San Fernando outside of Los Angeles when he gets the invitation to meet with the ageing aviation billionaire Whitney Vance. When he was 18, Vance had a relationship with a Mexican girl called Vibiana Duarte, but soon after becoming pregnant she disappeared.
Now, as he reaches the end of his life, Vance wants to know what happened to Vibiana and whether there is an heir to his vast fortune. And Bosch is the only person he trusts to undertake the assignment.
Harry's aware that with such sums of money involved, this could be a dangerous undertaking - not just for himself but for the person he's looking for - but as he begins to uncover Vibiana's tragic story and finds uncanny links to his own past, he knows he cannot rest until he finds the truth.

Continuing series with consistent quality
A new Harry Bosch book is always a welcome bit of news to me and the trend of having Titus Welliver from the Amazon TV adaptation narrate the audio books only enhances that feeling of anticipation. This entry delivers on that promise and was a welcome addition to the series. Welliver's subtle McConaghey impression for the Mickey Haller character drew some smiles from me too.
