Publisher's Summary
The night she moves in with Peter, she’s so happy, so exhilarated, so in love. Later, she will remember a much smaller feeling, a tiny 1 percent in her gut. And she will remember pushing that feeling aside....
Samantha Frayn doesn’t know why Peter Bridges picks her - a nobody with bitten fingernails and a troubled childhood behind her - but she falls quickly. He’s older, charming, likes fine wine and French films, and his beautiful home has real art on its walls.
Peter transforms Samantha’s life in an instant. He sees the better version of herself - the one she’s always wanted to be. It’s only normal that there’s a little friction, when she moves in, over domestic matters like where things are kept, or the proper times to eat, sleep, and shower. She’s lucky to be with someone who can help her find a new job, move on from childish friends, and speak with greater sophistication.
But as Samantha notices, more and more, Peter’s temper, she starts to wonder if there might be consequences to breaking the rules of the world he has so quickly built around her.
And then she receives an anonymous note that makes her ask: Is she the first woman to feel trapped by Peter? Is she being paranoid, manipulated, or could she be in danger?
You can tell the truth about your life, but someone needs to be listening. Someone needs to trust you. And someone needs to save you from the man you thought you loved.

Maybe it gets better?
I've gotten about halfway through and decided to return this book; I don't know - maybe it gets better, but the pace is extraordinarily slow and so far anything that HAS happened is pretty predictable. I just couldn't keep slogging on with it.

The main character was so unlikable
I don't know if I've ever disliked the main character in a book so much before! To me it was an insult to women who really are treated badly in their marriage! She made terrible choices and felt sorry for herself! And don't get me started on how the author makes 40 and 50 seem like you have one foot in the grave! You would have thought Sam married a 90 year old! SMH!! I had to google the author to see her age and was surprised she wasn't a 20 year old! I really cannot understand the high reviews for this book!

Little Far Fetched, But Kept my Attention
Narration was good and definitely gives insight into abusive relationships and the perpetrator’s ability to manipulate & “ease into” abusive patterns. Toward the end it felt a little scattered and far fetched, but overall I enjoyed it.

BORING AS HELL!
Ok, I usually don’t give really bad ratings, but this book was a total waste of time. It’s not a psychological thriller at all. The main character is dumb as hell and gets knocked up by a cheating, ecstasy taking, narcissistic older man (professor). It’s all about his screwed up cheating ways and manipulative tactics preying on young girls/women. No climax. No build up. The book could have been a lot shorter. This has to be the worst audible book and waste of my time. Save your money! Save your time! Save your frustration!

If the “First Wives Club” all married the same man
Hm, this book was entertaining and had a few twists thrown in here and there to keep it interesting, but with more scrutiny, the events and timing were rushed and made it a little unrealistic. It’s about a college senior who falls in love with a professor at her university and they begin a whirlwind relationship, so there is a huge gap in their age. Typically, it starts off all romantic and the guy is seemingly perfect and gradually he turns into, or should I say, reveals himself to be an awful partner and person. The story snowballs from there as their lives unfold. I appreciate stories that are complete and we are provided with total resolution about how the characters are left at the end and this book did just that.

Disappointing.
I found this a difficult listen, I tried multiple times to get into it, and found both of the narrator and the written 'voice' of the lead character so annoying I kept switching it off. The narrative was heavy handed and I was irritated throughout by the obviousness of the 'hints' about key plot twists.
It was overlong, obvious and irritating.

Let down by the ending
Putting the ending of a book at the beginning is a bold move, and one that really requires careful planning and major twists. This had none, and thus was sadly predictable from start to finish. Unrealistic character insights and female relationships. Altogether disappointing.

Excellent story well narrated
I thoroughly enjoyed this book it was different from the usual psychological thriller. The story was unusual a highly unlikeable philanderer and his appalling attitude to women and what happens when his worlds collide? I liked the narrator and felt she made the main female character likable. I would certainly read more by this author.

Not gripped
The only reason I kept reading this book was because of the many rave reviews. I was so close to giving up about 1/4 through but kept going because so many had said it was so ‘gripping’. But no. Some bits were just plain boring. Some parts seemed totally irrelevant to the story. It was frustrating to have listened all the way through to find the ending didn’t make up for the time spent. The narration was pretty good. Wouldn’t recommend this book.
