Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents a brand-new recording of Roald Dahl's classic The Witches, read by Miranda Richardson.

The Witches have a motto: One child a week is 52 a year. Squish them and squiggle them and make them disappear. The Grand High Witch of All the World is the scariest of the lot, but one boy and the grandmother he adores have a plan to get rid of the witches for good.

Hard to listen to

I love this story and most of the narration was done very well, but I did not understand a single word the Grand High Witch said. was super distracting and put me off listening to it. wish there was another version on audible.

Grand High Witch - Inaudible

The Grand High Witch is the best part of the story, and up until that point, it was fabulous, however the narration of the voice is absolutely awful - the accent is loud, rough, and unable to be understood by adults and children alike.

The story that I loved

In the words on my 7yo daughter... I loved this book. I loved the way the person read it. I liked it because it has mice in it, but I got a bit sad in parts. It was also a teensy bit scary.

Unable to understand

We had to endure 20minutes of the grand high witch screaming words we could not understand! It seemed her voice was at volume 10 and all other voices were level 3.

Fantastic!

I have always loved this book, it is clever and funny and a classic book for children. This version is excellent. A lot of people have complained it their reviews about the narrator’s accent for the Grand High Witch, but compared to the written book, the narrator said the words how they were written, and she had the correct accent, and I had no trouble understanding her at all. Perhaps because I already knew the book almost by heart, I knew what she was saying. But I didn’t think it was an issue. I think the narrator did a great job, and if I have any complaint about the book, it’s that there were background sound effects that were unnecessary and a little distracting at times. But that was a minor niggle and not really a problem.

Good listen!

My 7 year old enjoyed listening to the story over 2 weeks. She liked the plot and it held her attention. The narrator was mostly enjoyable to listen to however my daughter and I agreed she was difficult to understand as the 'grand high witch'. Overall a great audio book.

I love this book because it is cool. I love this audio book because it is famous. I enjoyed it because of the witches, that’s all.

So well told and of course masterfully written

So easy to listen to her voice. loved all the different voices for all the characters. I also liked the little sounds that followed the story. it's a beautifully written story but I think it could be a tiny bit scary for kids under 8. never boring

Perfect narration

Miranda Richardson does a stellar job of narrating this. A consumate actress and performer, she perfectly encapsulates each character - little boy, grandmother, Grand High Witch - in a way that breathes new life into a familiar story. The sound effects complemented the narrative perfectly, and I enjoyed the story as much as I ever had as a child. A deserved 5 star rating, all round.

Really good to listen to

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would defiantly recommend this. its perfect to listen to on long journeys, and reminds you of your childhood with Dahl.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Witches?

When the cook chops off the end of the tail of the young boy who is now a mouse.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

when the boy told his grandma that he was happy that he wouldn't have a long life as a mouse because he didn't want to live without her.

Any additional comments?

If you want something to listen to that's nice and easy this is it. I would say that sometimes Miranda voice is hard to understand when she is the high grand witch but besides that its brilliant.

Wonderfully witchy

Really enjoyed listening to this. I love Roald Dahl's imagination along with his dark humour. The story is engaging and certainly entertains all the way through. Miranda is so wonderful with her accents and rolling Rrrrrs.

Terrible grand high witch

Love this story we decided to listen to on a recent car journey. Had to turn it off in the end due to the incomprehensible shouting voice of the grand high witch.

Some parts incomprehensible

Loving this narration until the grand high witch character started to speak. My children and I struggled to tell what she was saying. After a chapter or two she calms down and it's all great from there!

First book I've returned

I love this story and the narrator does a mostly good job. However, as others have said, the chapters involving the grand high witch are pretty unbearable and there's spikes in the volume that make these parts an unpleasant listen. There are also sound effects played throughout the narration. I found these to be clumsy, often poorly timed and just generally immersion breaking. I could put up with either the grand high witch or the sfx, but both of them together means I wouldn't listen to this again, so I've returned it.
