Publisher's Summary

My husband was not a monster. No matter what they say....

The day my husband, Michael, stepped in front of a lorry after being questioned by the police, my world fell apart. He was devoted to me and our six-year-old daughter. But they’d connected him to the disappearance of a young mother from our tiny village.

Now I stand at Michael’s funeral, clutching my little girl’s hand, with tears in my eyes as I insist to all our friends that he died an innocent man. Yet the questions have started, and nothing I say will stop them digging for the truth.

But none of them can read the secrets in my heart, or know about the phone I found hidden in his toolbox....

I’m determined that my daughter will not remember her father as a monster. I will erase any hint of wrongdoing in this house whatever the cost.

Because to keep my daughter safe, the last thing I need is for people to start looking at me....

A completely gripping psychological thriller from the author of the number one best seller The Marriage. If you like Gone Girl, The Girl on The Train and The Wife Between Us then you will love The Widow.

slow burner

An interesting story, a little slow but overall not bad. I struggled with Michael not telling Kate what had happened as there relationship was "so" strong the one person he could have confided in was her, that took this book down a notch.

A good steady slow burn

I loved the narrator’s repertoire of characters - such a talent! Definitely gives an edge to the overall story. I was instantly taken into the little village with lots of relatable characters plus what I think is a reasonably believable plot. It was nice to come to the end of it though, with two or three twists and maybe a turn, but it had certainly burnt out by its finish. I say that as a positive.
Overall a very well thought out story with a very talented narrator. Win. Win.

Twists & Turns!

The Widow by K. L. Slater, narrated by Lucy Price-Lewis was an awesome audiobook! Not only is the storyline suspenseful and engaging, but it's also filled with unexpected twists and turns, making for an unpredictable outcome! I'll let you read the plot summary on your own so I don't give anything away, but just know there is more than one storyline to follow. Pay attention to the dates and if you start to feel like there are too many characters to keep track of (like I did), just keep listening because any minute it will all come together and start to make sense.

In addition to the great writing, I found the narration by Lucy Price-Lewis to be outstanding! I am really happy I chose to listen to this one instead of read it because there was never a dull moment. I loved listening to her performance and definitely plan to hear more in the future.

Overall, I give The Widow by K. L. Slater, narrated by Lucy Price-Lewis 4.5/5 stars. The writing and narration are both top-notch, and fans of the genre are going to love it!

Thank you for reading my review. I hope it was helpful. :-)

Ignore dramatic reviews

Ignore the main review that says this is so so terrible.. just give it a listen.
Some books start off slow, this is one. I mean, honestly it’s just a typical KL Slater story..the end is, for the most part, easily guessed. the story in between isn’t awful like one read it is. Great? No…Terrible? No….But, simply GOOD. Lol.

Also glad I ignored previous reviews

I listened despite some negative reviews and enjoyed the book. There were enough twists to satisfy and I found the transitions to be smooth and believable. I would recommend the listen.

Not suspenseful and not a thriller

What a disappointment. The book is nothing like the overview. Not even close to a thriller or suspenseful. More like a domestic drama. I used to like KL Slater’s books but it seems the quality has declined with each book. This is the last book of hers I will listen to. The only thing that was good about it is that it was free with Audible plus.

enjoyable but not gory

I read some other reviews before getting it and was doubtful. This book didn't keep me on the edge of my seat, but it was good. No sex scenes, nothing gory. it was a mystery. I enjoyed it. I would read another by this author.

Enjoyable, but a few questions

This is very much an easy listening thriller, as another reviewer has said. There are a lot of threads, deftly woven together, and a neat tying up at the end. Downsides for me were rather too many long passages with people describing their feelings at length, no sense of even mild peril, and some rather unbelievable acts of forgiveness. Beautifully read.

Dull style of writing, ok plot

A little formulaic as it was easy to guess a lot of the plot very early on, but the main problem is that the writing style is so boring. It's almost how a child would write. We have to listen to every mundane thought that goes through Kate's head, and even if something is blatantly obvious it's still over-explained just in case we are too stupid to work it out for ourselves. I am astounded at some of the reviews that claim it's beautifully written - I can't imagine what they have read previously that makes this book receive such praise. The fast forward button was my saviour.

Domestic Thriller

Usual domestic thriller with the woman as the lead character, lots of politics revolving around Mums at the school gates, straying husbands....that kind of thing. And of course being a thriller, there has to be a murder.
So, it's not intellectual, but really well done, plenty of twists but an easy listen. Nothing too complicated. Something to keep the listeners' interest all the way through.

Enjoyable

I do like K L Slater's storylines, but in every book the kids are precocious bratts. Spoilt, demanding and whining. I wish she'd leave them out or at least, try to make them likeable!

Apart from that, I enjoyed this book lol

Trite and predictable

I found this book to be quite boring overall, with stilted unrealistic dialogue and a humdrum story. the best thing about it was the narrator who did the best she could with the source material

Great start mah ending

Over all I enjoyed the story but the twists could be seen from a mile off. The lack of consequences for peoples bad actions at the end of the book really annoyed me. It all kind of fizzled out.

competent

The writing is competent but with zero originality. In fact a catalogue of well worn English phrases.
