About this listen

Your toddler throws a tantrum in the middle of a store. Your preschooler refuses to get dressed. Your 11-year-old sulks on the bench instead of playing on the field. Do children conspire to make their parents’ lives endlessly challenging? No — it’s just their developing brains calling the shots.

In this pioneering, practical book, Daniel J. Siegel - neuropsychiatrist and author of the best-selling Mindsight - and parenting expert Tina Payne Bryson demystify the meltdowns and aggravation, explaining the new science of how a child’s brain is wired and how it matures. The ‘upstairs brain’, which makes decisions and balances emotions, is under construction until the mid-20s. And especially in young children, the right brain and its emotions tend to rule over the logic of the left brain.

By applying these discoveries to everyday parenting, you can turn any outburst, argument, or fear into a chance to integrate your child’s brain and foster vital growth. With clear explanations and age-appropriate strategies for dealing with day-to-day struggles, The Whole-Brain Child shows you how to cultivate healthy emotional and intellectual development so that your children can lead balanced, meaningful, and connected lives.

This Whole Brain Child covers all the essentials of the brain using vivid imagery, recaps, relatable stories and clever rhymes eg “name it to tame it” that are not only helpful for the reader/listener to retain information but also to conceptualise the strategies.

The book delivers information in a concise and wholistic in the way it links physical parts of the brain, analogies, behaviours and demonstrates ways to put concepts into practice.

This book is for everyone! It can help you better understand yourself and others. It examines the different developmental stages of the brain and age appropriate implementation of concepts. The concepts themselves remain applicable for all ages and can be applied in just about if not every setting. Whether you are a parent, teacher, coach, caregiver, friend or a member of society in which we relate to one another. This book is for you!

Thank you Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson as well as all involved in producing this very well thought out book. I have enjoyed listening to this through audible and will be continuing my learning and practice of the concepts taught. I am passionate about supporting children’s emotional and social development and capacity building in others to do the same. As the book. I truly believe as surmised in the book that through education and awareness of our brains we can positively shape society. I will definitely be recommending this book!

As a developmental psychologist, this book is useful for parents and clinicians. The strategies and explanations are practical. It's a must read in the child development library. However there is not much mention of neurodivergence.

Helpful strategies and clear analogies

This book is a must-read for any soon-to-be parent or current parent. The book provides a comprehensive guide on nurturing and raising your child's developing brain and offers practical strategies to help your child thrive emotionally and intellectually.

The authors, Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson, have done an excellent job of breaking down complex brain science concepts into simple and easy-to-understand language, making it accessible to every parent. They also provide real-life examples and practical exercises that parents can use to implement the strategies discussed in the book.

One of the most valuable insights I gained from the book is the concept of "integration," which is the ability to bring together different parts of the brain to function as a whole. The authors explain how parents can help children develop this ability by fostering healthy attachment, encouraging play, and promoting emotional regulation.

Overall, I highly recommend "The Whole-Brain Child" to all parents who want to give their child the best start in life. The strategies outlined in the book are backed by science and can help parents raise emotionally intelligent, resilient children who can thrive in the world.

Essential information for any parent - or any human! Practical strategies which can be applied immediately with astounding results. Helpful for adults trying to be better communicators, partners, and people, as well as parents striving to raise happy, healthy and secure kids. My only quibble is that the narration gets a bit stilted. It's narrated by the authors, who are brilliant researchers and therapists, but the delivery lacks a bit of oomph.

A must-read for parents
