Publisher's Summary

Your toddler throws a tantrum in the middle of a store. Your preschooler refuses to get dressed. Your 11-year-old sulks on the bench instead of playing on the field. Do children conspire to make their parents’ lives endlessly challenging? No — it’s just their developing brains calling the shots.

In this pioneering, practical book, Daniel J. Siegel - neuropsychiatrist and author of the best-selling Mindsight - and parenting expert Tina Payne Bryson demystify the meltdowns and aggravation, explaining the new science of how a child’s brain is wired and how it matures. The ‘upstairs brain’, which makes decisions and balances emotions, is under construction until the mid-20s. And especially in young children, the right brain and its emotions tend to rule over the logic of the left brain.

By applying these discoveries to everyday parenting, you can turn any outburst, argument, or fear into a chance to integrate your child’s brain and foster vital growth. With clear explanations and age-appropriate strategies for dealing with day-to-day struggles, The Whole-Brain Child shows you how to cultivate healthy emotional and intellectual development so that your children can lead balanced, meaningful, and connected lives.

A goodblend of theory and practise

A good practical guide to preparing resilient, well adjusted little people. For toddler to teen, but it will provide insight and ideas on your adult relationships.

Good read

Although I’ve read the concepts pointed out in other emotional intelligence books, this was a good usage of those concepts in children and kids of all ages. Will try to use them on my toddler once she’s born and see how it goes.

Visual imagery to retain content that is simple to apply with examples provided.

Very good book for emotional intelligence. Although most content is helpful, some may not apply so much to neurodiverse children and may need slight adapting. A chapter or two on this would be good.

A must-read for parents

Essential information for any parent - or any human! Practical strategies which can be applied immediately with astounding results. Helpful for adults trying to be better communicators, partners, and people, as well as parents striving to raise happy, healthy and secure kids. My only quibble is that the narration gets a bit stilted. It's narrated by the authors, who are brilliant researchers and therapists, but the delivery lacks a bit of oomph.

A must read for any parent

Reading this book has changed my life. My relationships with my children has become so much stronger and closer. I couldn't recommend this book enough. Even if you don't have children of your own, this book will help you understand yourself on a deeper level.
