Publisher's Summary

In South Carolina, a young black man faces the death penalty for the rape and murder of Marianne Larousse, daughter of one of the wealthiest men in the state. It's a case that nobody wants to touch, a case with its roots in old evil, and old evil is private detective Charlie Parker's speciality. But Parker is about to make a descent into the abyss, a confrontation with dark forces that threaten all that Parker holds dear: his lover, his unborn child, even his soul. . .

For in a prison cell, a fanatical preacher is about to take his revenge on Charlie Parker, its instruments the very men that Parker is hunting, and a strange, hunched creature that keeps its own secrets buried by a riverbank: the undiscovered killer Cyrus Nairn. Soon, all of these figures will face a final reckoning in southern swamps and northern forests, in distant locations linked by a single thread, a place where the paths of the living and the dead converge. A place known only as the White Road.

Horrible narrator.

I have read the book and loved the story. I have enjoyed listening to the other Charlie Parker books because Jeff Harding does a great job narrating but for some reason they chose to use someone else for this book and he is terrible. He doesn't even say Lewis name properly. I couldn't even get through the first chapter listening to this narrator. I would recommend the other books but definitely not this one due to different narrator.

John Connolly has a great series on his hands

John Connolly has a great series on his hands but Jeff Harding is the only suitable narrator. Charlie Parker and his life experiences are a little bit out there, not unlike James Lee Burke's series featuring Dave Robicheaux, and Jeff Harding's tambre and cadence bring the character and the book to life the same way Will Patton does for James Lee Burke. Bring back Jeff Harding to stay in the top tier.

Change in narrator is off putting

The story is good, my favorite in the series so far, but the change or narrated, and thus voices as a result, throws you off at first.

I'll give Paul that he is a good voice actor, but the voices for Charlie, Angel, and Louis were just off. would have given him a higher rating though if he had pronounced Louis correctly though

Alonzo

I think I have read all of John Connollys ' books ,and have never been disapointed. The White Road is excellent and in keeping with this authors best. His use of the language is first class, his characters whilst complex are interesting, his plots are perhaps deep, but very compete, The Narrator added to the books enjoyment I look forward to further novels

sorry Paul Birchard, bring back Jeff Harding

Would you consider the audio edition of The White Road to be better than the print version?

no, not even slightly better, and I love the John Connolly tales on audio

What did you like best about this story?

it's yet another excellent John Connolly, and a great story about Louis' background, but I only know that because I've read the print version

How could the performance have been better?

Something about Paul Birchard's voice just didn't sit with me, I'm pleased he only narrated one of the Charlie Parker books!

Any additional comments?

I'll keep the book just so I have the full set, but I really can't listen to the narrator, he's stopped me listening to the books until I re-read the print version!

Dissapointed with Narrating

Another great Charlie Parker story, but I struggled all the way through because of the narrating. Unfortunately, in my opinion, Paul Birchard doesn't do the books justice. And I must admit, I did get quite distracted throughout hearing Louis called 'Lewis'.

Different narrator, but.....

I am torn as Parker is Harding to me. However, I preferred this narrator's interpretation for all the other characters. He made Louie more human and Angel vulnerable but smart. So I am conflicted but I feel this is one of my favourite Parker stories.

Slightly disappointed !

The overall story is a good crime fiction but I found the paranormal element a touch unbelievable and this reduced the grittiness of the storyline for me. I marked the narrator down although he was very good. He wasn't the same narrator as in the previous books in this series and his accent changed the dynamics of the characters. Also it took me a while to realise that Lewis (Louis)was the same person as Looey in the previous books.

Tying up loose ends!

Really good to finally get some tying up of all the loose ends around Reverend Faulkner. I struggled with the narration to begin with. After having Jeff Harding do the first three in the series, I have the voices and names based on his performances and its really hard to hear a weaker narrator try and do it justice. However, this is a great story and really enjoyable.

Great story odd narrator choice

Im working my back through these books via audiobook so yes! Buy this book, Charlie is gritty and violent and the stories are always excellent. But for me, the narrator has made a gritty, grisled Private eye; sound like a 1930s New York guido and it really didn’t work for me, it actually put me off. His other characters are great but Charlie? Sorry but no. But please don’t let my review put you off because its an excellent thriller.

it’s not Jeff Harding, but it’s still Charlie P.

For those in doubt because Jeff Harding IS Charlie Parker, do not skip this title in the series. Paul Birchard does a good job, and you need to follow the plot.
