A turbulent marriage
- By Anna Spencer on 16-10-2016
Publisher's Summary
From the bestselling author of When I’m Gone and Working Fire comes a gripping novel about a mother, her missing daughter, and the dark secrets that engulf them.
Ever since her husband’s death collided with the birth of her daughter, postpartum depression has taken hold of Veronica Shelton. She can’t sleep, can’t work, and can’t bear to touch her beautiful baby girl. Her emotional state is whispering lies in Veronica’s ear: You’re a bad mother. Your baby would be better off without you. But not everything can be reasoned away by Veronica’s despair. Can it?
After all, the break-in at her house happened. The disturbing sketches she found in her studio are real. So is the fear for her daughter’s safety—especially when Veronica comes home to a cold, silent nursery and a missing baby.
As she turns from victim into primary suspect, Veronica realizes that only she can find her daughter. Authorities aren’t helping. They’re only watching. Veronica’s concerned mother has suddenly vanished from her life. And a new friend seems to be keeping secrets from her too. Now, reality is waiting for Veronica in a dark place—because someone’s mind games have only just begun.

Love books with a twist? Then this is a good read.
Even though the book was a little slow to start, its worth persevering. I found it became more intense after chapter 17. Thoroughly enjoyed the storyline.

Enthusiastic 5 well earned stars! Highly recommended.
Stellar! Masterful storytelling from the beginning to the final word. Ms. Bleeker weaves a powerful, sometimes heart wrenching tale. The characters are well developed and complex; each of whom is flawed. I was quite anxious during much of this book. I knew and/or suspected certain details, but the writing was so good that I questioned myself on many occasions. I’m glad I listened to the audiobook rather than reading it, because I don’t know if I could have resisted the temptation of flipping to the end.
Sophie Amoss’ performance was equally superb. Her voice inflections and nuances let the listener know who’s who, adding to the enjoyment of this great book. Her voice is pleasant and evoked raw emotion.
This isn’t my first Bleeker novel, but is my favorite thus far. I look forward to more of her work. This IS my first experience with Sophie Amoss, but I will consider audiobooks performed by her in the future just because it’s her.

Predictable.
Predictable. To much hype for what it delivered! It could have been SO much better. A LOOOOONG DRAWN OUT getting to the point and then a very predictable dull ending. Disappointed.

Couldn't stop listening!!!!
This truly is my favorite audible book that I have heard in the past two years. My job is a courier so I’m in the car for hours and hours on end and this book kept me interested, excited, sad at times, and enthralled with the possibility of where the author was going to take me next. Giving it five stars is five stars less than I would like to give it! I did not expect the ending and I’m one of those people who thinks out every plot for a story but because I enjoyed this one so much I purposely did not think about what might or might not happen. Wouldn’t of changed a thing… I did not expect what came next. I am now on the hunt to read every book this Emily Bleeker has written and will write. Thoroughly enjoyed the story. Actually found myself tearing up at quite a few spots during the reading of it. Absolutely loved it! And you couldn’t have found a better narrator,

Shocked by all the great reviews!
Hate to bash this book because the author obviously put a lot of thought into it, but it was awful. Simple writing, cliche descriptions and it was so completely unbelievable even with the plot twists explanations. Half way through I had rolled my eyes so many times I had a headache. I wanted to give up on this book so many times, but needed to know if it would redeem itself - it did not. This author hoped that all her plot twists would distract us from the generic writing, but it just made for a boringly ridiulous storyline. Narrator added nothing to the story and she grated on me. I want my credit back and I'm curious why such good reviews because that was not anyone's best work.

Pretty disappointing 'twist'
I was enjoying where it was going until the 'twist' was revealed, it was one of those kind of hacky, cliche twists that felt a bit like a cop-out. Despite that though I did finish it, and even felt like overall it was well written, just not as suspenseful as what I was looking for.

Excellent psychodrama
Well told and narrated! A different book - lots of feelings as well as plot, though you have to stay with it - the plot heats up quite a bit later in the book. It’s worth waiting.

Boring!
This is the my least favorite book I have listened to. The story is rambling and boring without any surprises. Wow, really just awful. I will be returning for sure.

Lifetime type with a small twist
So I was excited to read to reviews about the twist but I felt it was a little less then shocking. All in all still well worth the credit.

Painfully boring
It is such a shame that what could have been a great story was so excruciating boring. If you decide to waste money or a credit on this book, skip to the last chapters. You won’t miss anything of substance. The author did a “great job” at rambling on and on without adding any value to the story.
