Publisher's Summary

No one could understand why Colin and Roy were best friends. Colin was so shy; Roy was so popular. Colin was nervous around girls; Roy was a ladies' man. Colin was fascinated by Roy - and Roy was fascinated by death.

Then one day Roy asked his timid friend: "You ever killed anything?" And from that moment on, the two were bound together in a game too terrifying to imagine...and too irresistible to stop.

Another Koontz hit!!

I have always found Dean Koontz to be an entertaining writer. He does not fail to entertain the reader and kept me wanting to read more in this novel once again. Although he stretches a couple of the scenes to be unbelievable, he recovers to keep me involved in the story and at times I had difficulty stopping to return at a later time.

Just terrible

Did Dean Koontz really write this? Maybe the narrator had something to do with it, as it was like listening to 7 hours of Gilbert Gottfried. I wanted everyone to meet with a gruesome end. I just hated every character even the whiny main character who spent most of the time arguing with himself. But I really wanted to wring Roy's neck. Badly.

Horrible narrator

The book wasn't so bad, but the narrator was agony! He read much too slow and too deliberately, sounded like he was reading a pre-school story to children...for 7 hours!

Disappointing

This was disappointing in 2 respects - first, it lacked the usual "Koontzian" flare (written in 1980); second, the narrator was annoying to me. If you're expecting a nailbiter, pass on this book.

Audio pass

I read this book in my teens back in the 90's. Loved it, and always wished a movie came of it, it is a good book. But I really didn't like the narrator, he didn't add to the listening experience. He kind of made it weird, forced emotion...just all bad.

Yep -- it's Koontz...what's the name on the cover?

A Koontz book, but written under a pseudonym. Why do they do that? Are they embarrassed about a work? An unusual Koontz work, this one...the characters are teens, there is no supernatural intervention, and I thought it would be about the usual teen age angst of growing up. But, this book is about Psycho in making... It was suspenseful. That the main [teen] character was able to set up such a complex ending is a bit baffling; it made good reading anyway.

An unusual Koontz

An unusual Koontz. The characters are teens, there is no supernatural intervention, and there is (in this case thankfully) no dog. The narration was very good, and the story was interesting. This kept me involved in the story, but it was not Koontz at his best. There is a lot of setup followed by a swift conclusion. It was missing some of the high tension character development that Koontz does so well. It is still better than most in the genre.

Suspenseful and Thrilling

This book was the first book I ever read by Koontz and had me hooked from beginning to end. It was so good 7 years ago when I read it for the first time that I've had to go back to it multiple times! Absolutely love it! It's a "Popper"

not his best. predictable, poor voice. poor plot.

an amateurish story with a slightly annoying voice actor. changing either one though would not help much. felt like this was written in a week.

What an amazingly good, simple story

This was superb, very simple story but excellently read and I found myself gripped from start to finish.
There are characters in this book that you will want to shake by the ears... there are others that you will want to give a big hug too... Really, really good
