Publisher's Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Visitor by Lee Child, read by Jeff Harding.

Sergeant Amy Callan and Lieutenant Caroline Cooke have a lot in common.

Both were army highflyers. Both were acquainted with Jack Reacher. Both were forced to resign from the service.

Now they're both dead.

Found in their own homes, naked, in a bath full of paint.

Apparent victims of an army man. A loner, a smart guy with a score to settle, a ruthless vigilante.

A man just like Jack Reacher.

I enjoyed the first two books more.

A good mystery. I didn’t guess the killer. Still suspenseful and has some action but not as enjoyable as the first two.

Kept me guessing.

Story kept me interested, wanting to keep listening. Left unanswered question re one character which seemed to be a hole in the story. Another good performance by Jeff Harding.

I'm a big fan of Reacher but...

...there were moments in this book that made him seem like such a clueless dolt, not the expert ex-military police officer we know him as. This made some scenes so unbearable to listen to, you might doubt this is actually a Reacher novel. His womanising nature is problematic here too, sometimes he comes across as barely controlling his sexual urges by veiling it in some half-hearted notion of chivalry. Nevertheless, the overall story did have an intriguing hook, was pretty enjoyable and kept me guessing until the end. Unfortunately the narrator grated on me so badly. His voice has a cadence about it that makes every sentence sound like he's reading the book in some kind of bullet point format, or that he's recorded the thing one line at a time. On top of that his voice for Reacher I think is a big factor in making the character sound like an idiot. It looks like all these books are narrated by Jeff Harding, so I'll probably have to go back to reading instead of listening for the rest of the series.

Narrator

I’m sorry but Jeff Harding as a narrator did nothing for me, couldn’t even listen to the whole book! I must be more attentive with my preview. So sad as I’ve read so many Lee Child’s, Jack Reacher, and was excited to be able to listen! I do hope other Lee Child audios have other narrators!

Too obvious

from about a quarter of the way through the book it was obvious that Lamar was the killer, for money, and was hypnotising the victims

Another great story

I like the speed and movement of the story, of all the stories so far! Reacher is a pretty good “hero” but I’d prefer he’d kept the house to come back to from time to time... but I haven’t finished the series yet so we’ll just have to wait and see! Try the first one - you’ll enjoy at least to here...

Pretty good

Intriguing story but hard to get used to such a masculine voice doing female characters also without laughing.

Lee Child

As usual Lee has done it again, Jack Reacher is my favourite character and have read and listened to all his books many times over. I only listen to Jeff Harding though

Pity about the narrator ...

Although I am loving the Jack Reacher series, this book was a chore to listen to. If it wasn't that the story was so good, I would have given up after the first half hour. The narrator is one of the worst I have listened to, not finishing his sentences and applying the same sing song cadence to all the sentences he reads.

Bad narration

The narration is bad. Its rythim is awakward. Its repeated patterns put me to sleep.

Interesting story with twists. Great narration.

Really enjoyed the plot, and the narrator was much better than that used in a previous version which I returned. Most memorable moment "......eyes went wide in sudden panic and then she died". Lots of good lines, characters clearly defined in the voices. This is really helpful.

Agatha Christie-esque

This was a very well thought out story, but you have to stick with it right to the end for everything to fall into place, much like an Agatha Christie. Some early storyline seems overtly antagonistic between characters, but this fits into place (a bit better) later on. Not my favourite Reacher book, but well worth a read.

Really, really, poor ending.

Like any reader would, I spent the whole book wondering how he was going to reconcile the strange behaviour of some of the book characters. And he achieved it by assuming that his readers are all 9 years old. Not just any 9 year olds but the kind of naive half-stupid 9 year olds who still believe in ghosts and santa claus. I like the Reacher books but this was an insult to my intelligence, a real letdown.

Not my favourite so far

I personally like the action Reacher, so for me this story was lacking. However, good plot and usual clever writing. It won't put me off though, on to the next Reacher story.....

dissapointing

the story became less and less believable. The FBI could not have lied or manipulated in the way they supposedly did. This devalued the whole story.

Author Breaks Trust with His Readers

Any additional comments?

Any reader of a "who done it" expects plot twists. In fact they are crucial to an entertaining read. Lee Child abandons believability in this book. He provide's clues to the murder's identity that are totally bogus. I refer to the scene where the killer is described crossing a name off of a list and is interrupted by an army corporal. Bull shit to the whole story.

Not The Best Lee Childs I've Read

Why was I disappointed? I.M.O. - I thought that the beginning premise of the story was very far fetched....I don't think it could happen (?). I hated the ending for the same reason!! The 'middle' was very good. The plot was good, but marred for me because of the above reason.
