About this listen

A woman vanishes in the fog up on "the Hill", an area locally known for its tranquillity and peace. The police are not alarmed; people usually disappear for their own reasons. But when a young girl, an old man, and even a dog disappear, no one can deny that something untoward is happening in this quiet cathedral town. Young policewoman Freya Graffham is assigned to the case; she's new to the job, compassionate, inquisitive, dedicated, and needs to know, perhaps, too much. She and the enigmatic detective Chief Inspector Simon Serrailler have the task of unravelling the mystery behind this gruesome sequence of events. From the passages revealing the killer's mind to the final heart-stopping twist, The Various Haunts of Men is an astounding and masterly crime debut and is the first in what promises to be a magnificent series featuring Simon Serrailler.©2004 Susan Hill (P)2014 Audible, Inc. Starts off slowly but builds to an intense scary climax. Very well read by Stephen Pacey.

I really liked the variety of characters and it was easy to get involved with their lives. There was an interesting romance in the air. The actual crime was more like an after thought in the story and it didn’t take much to realise who had done it. From there the book went downhill and was very unsatisfactory.

An unsatisfactory ending

Like many books these days this book followed many characters, some of which were interesting while others were not. The plot as a whole kept me interested and by about halfway through I was really looking forward to listening to it. Unfortunately though I found the ending incredibly disappointing. I understand the quality of an ending that isn’t picture perfect however I need something positive rather than depressing, sad and unsatisfying.

Good story well narrated but disappointing ending

This was a great read. The author managed the complex relationships of plot and subplot and between characters with a truly deft touch. It was refreshing to see the main character drawn by the reaction of a subordinate by emotional response moderated by her self awareness. More than a detective story this was good fiction.

Highly recommended

Too gruesome for me. You need a strong stomach for this one and a taste for horror.
