Publisher's Summary

New novel in John Ringo's Black Tide Rising series.

From his corner office on the 44th floor of the Bank of the Americas tower on Wall Street, Tom Smith, global managing director for security, could see the Statue of Liberty, Battery Park - and a ravening zombie horde.

Officially, Smith was paid to preserve the lives and fortunes of employees, billionaires, and other clients. And with an implacable virus that turned the infected into ravenous zombies tearing through the city, the country, and the world, his job just got a lot harder.

Good thing Smith, late of the Australian special forces, isn’t a man to give up easily. But saving civilization is going to take more than the traditional banking toolbox of lawyers, guns, and money. Smith needs infected human spinal tissue to formulate a vaccine - and he needs it by the truckload. To get it, he will have to forge a shady alliance with both the politicians of the City of New York and some of its less savory entrepreneurs.

But all of his back-alley dealing may amount to nothing if he can’t stave off the fast-moving disease as it sweeps across the planet, leaving billions dead in its wake. And if he fails, his only fallback is an incomplete plan to move enough personnel to safe havens and prepare to restart civilization.

What’s more, there are others who have similar plans - and believe it or not, they’re even less charitable than a Wall Street investment banker. Sooner or later, Smith will have to deal with them.

But first he has to survive the fall.

A new novel in John Ringo’s best-selling Black Tide Rising zombie apocalypse series.

geez that was brutal

my one complaint (small one) of the original books were that they were too happy go lucky. everything always worked out. although super entertaining the main characters never seemed in danger, just my opinion. but this book takes that and flips it. wow. I always felt sorry for tom. always sticking his neck out for everyone but getting backstabbed and betrayed. so worth the listen.

Not bad, just disappointing

As a general zombie apocalypse story, Valley of Shadows was pretty good. As a Black Tide Rising book, it was really disappointing. What makes the Black Tide Rising series so good, in my opinion, is that it isn't the same old "this is how we survived the beginning of the zombie apocalypse" story like basically everything else you come across. What makes Black Tide Rising so good is that it very quickly steps past the initial outbreak, jumps straight into the nightmare that is the fallen world. It skips over all the shallow, action-horror rigmarole that we've seen a thousand times and answers question "What comes next?" Where every other zombie apocalypse story stops the moment it reaches that question, BTR dives in head first and tells the story of how the survivors rebuild society, how they handle issues of 21st century morality in a hellish world, and how they cope with everything they have been through. I was expecting that this would be similar to the rest of the series; that Tom Smith, his crew, and his charges would be out of New York after a few chapters and that the rest of the book would be spent approaching "what comes next?" from a completely new angle. I was excited about that prospect....instead it felt like The Valley of Shadows was just a slightly above average zombie action-horror story that feels like a cheap knock-off of the Black Tide Rising series.

Fantastic new installment in the series!

The pairing of Mike Massa and John Ringo is apparently an awesome one. I absolutely loved this book. Definitely lives up to the rest of the series - can’t wait for the next installment!

Filled in some blanks.

Fills in on what happened to Tom right up to about a month before the Smith family started clearing ships. I'm hoping that this is a trilogy. I loved that the Brewmistress of the Keldara was mentioned. LOL!

Very disappointing

John Ringo is one of my favorite authors and has done a wonderful job of making a zombie apocalypse an interesting story. I really enjoyed the first 4 books and was looking for more to the story. This addition to the series however was unwelcome. the whole book could have "and was" a part of the first two books, it also had way to much unnecessary vulgarity in it.

Hated it.

Ringo is one of my favorite authors and I own all his books. This one, however, is the absolute worst. If you’re looking for a story about the ins and outs of banking then it’s your book. If you’re looking for a good zombie apocalypses story (like the others in the series) you will be greatly disappointed. This entire book could have been summarized in a single chapter in the first book of the series.

solid entry and also a master's class in crisis planning, leadership, and big finance. recommended!
