Publisher's Summary

Forced to leave the Clan and her young son, Ayla sets out alone to travel the frigid steppes until she finds the valley of horses. Unable to find people like herself, the Cro-Magnons, she settles there and seeks friendship elsewhere. First she adopts a young filly, then a wounded lion cub. But far to the west, two young Cro-Magnon brothers have begun a journey. One of them is Jondalar, whose destiny is bound inextricably with Ayla's.

Jean Auel's imaginative reconstruction of pre-historic life, rich in detail of language, culture, myth, and ritual, has become a set text in schools and colleges around the world.

Mostly wonderful

I am really enjoying the series, the long drawn out descriptions, I tend to lose a little interest, however, it drags me back in quickly after with exciting and new events.

I absolutely love this entire series!

The entire Earths children series is my absolute favorite story that i have ever read! I will definitely be sharing this story with my little girl when she is old enough and with many others. It is Inspiring, entertaining, amusing and educational. I am so grateful to Jean Auel for taking the time to write this and I truly hope that one day the film created of this series will go to air and become a world wide hit so that we can discover more about our ancestral past, in order for human kind to reconnect with what we have lost in this day and age.

Prehistory as fiction

A great yarn with lots of interesting facts. Don’t be dismissive. Enjoy. Gallop along with Whiny and Ayala.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

Great book, well researched and informative, as well as being excellent escapism. Excellent performance - the narrator has beautiful enunciation and a delightful voice, only slightly marred by a few isolated pronunciation problems with some words.

Typical tv soap screenplay

You know what a typical lazy writer does? Makes sure the main characters do not communicate so there will be unnescecery confusion on which the whole main storyline is based. If only they would have actually talked as soon as they could have.. Then the book would have ended half way in. Or wait, let's come up with a real plot?! Bad writer. Lazy.

My favourite from Jean M Auel

This is my favourite in the earth's children series. I love how strong Ayla is and how she is able to survive after the end of 'Clan of the Cave Bears'. At first I was a bit surprised to be following a different character but I feel the author does it well and it was a great way to introduce new people into the story. I was really happy with the narrator, she has a lovely voice and reads the book flawlessly which means I am able to immerse into the story. With many books I have been frustrated by narrators and not been able to enjoy the book but this was done really well.

Continuing Ayla’s story

I enjoyed hearing Ayla’s story and wanted her to find happiness. I liked the fact that she found a mate in Jondala but I got a bit fed up listening to all the explicit sex scenes. Nothing left to the imagination on numerous occasions. I wonder what the authors’s intention was . It seemed like it was a bit like it was the authors fantasies being aired. It all got a bit tiresome towards the end which ruined it somewhat

Quality

Excellent follow up to Clan of the cave bear. This book is really a buttress to the rest of the series it seems, great narrator and just about to start The Mammoth Hunters.

Perfect book, poor performance

What made the experience of listening to The Valley of Horses the most enjoyable?

I could shut my eyes and be transported to a different time.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ayla. I have read this book MANY times and it's one of my all time favourites.

Would you be willing to try another one of Rowena Cooper’s performances?

Her voice is too old for this story. Both Jondalar and Ayla are young people Rowena's voice did not suit.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I love this book - always have.

Dawn of time sequel

Having read the first book The clan of the cave bear and loved it, I was eagerly looking forward to learning about Aylas new adventures. The book starts off well describing how Ayla makes a new life for herself after having to leave the Neanderthal clan who had nurtured her from the age of 5 when she was found by them following an earthquake. The problem for me personally is that as this book moves on it gets a bit syrupy with Whinney the horse that Ayla adopts and Baby the cave lion that she save, then Jondalat the man of her dreams and it all becomes a bit fifty shades of fur. Personally I feel that the real essence of these books and what drew me in originally has been lost, Ms Auel has started writing to please the masses and lost the little something she had sparked in the first book Lastly great narration by Rowena Cooper. All said, I think I will call it a day after this book. Thanks but no thanks to the series.

great sequel

Amazing listen and great sequel to clan of the cave bear. Although the description of the sex scenes were somewhat laughable, I thoroughly enjoyed the entire audiobook.
