About this listen
Forced to leave the Clan and her young son, Ayla sets out alone to travel the frigid steppes until she finds the valley of horses. Unable to find people like herself, the Cro-Magnons, she settles there and seeks friendship elsewhere. First she adopts a young filly, then a wounded lion cub. But far to the west, two young Cro-Magnon brothers have begun a journey. One of them is Jondalar, whose destiny is bound inextricably with Ayla's.
Jean Auel's imaginative reconstruction of pre-historic life, rich in detail of language, culture, myth, and ritual, has become a set text in schools and colleges around the world.

"Holds the reader in a powerful spell." ( Publishers Weekly)
I will definitely be sharing this story with my little girl when she is old enough and with many others. It is Inspiring, entertaining, amusing and educational. I am so grateful to Jean Auel for taking the time to write this and I truly hope that one day the film created of this series will go to air and become a world wide hit so that we can discover more about our ancestral past, in order for human kind to reconnect with what we have lost in this day and age.
I absolutely love this entire series!

However upon rereading (or rather, listening) I can now look at the book with a critical view. The descriptive capabilities of Jean M. Auel cannot be denied, however sometimes this can be a deficit. The author can describe the scenery and people in such a way that you can see them in your head with perfect clarity, however this does cause the sprinkled in sex scenes to get graphic, and I didn’t know there was so many ways to describe a mans private parts.
I love this series, I listen to the books back to back. However even I can admit that there are flaws to it. Thankfully, Audible have a 30 second skip option if the sex scenes become too much.
All in all, a great series that I regularly recommend to people (with a warning about the regular intercourse)
I really enjoyed it and will definitely listen again once I finish the series.
Well written and descriptive, but flawed.

Loved her becoming a badass hunter with a lion. Was hoping she would go into battle with him but it went in a different direction.
It's bordering on X rated too.
Better than the first.

Over the years I’ve introduced many people people to the series and love the long conversations the book can kick off. It’s so descriptive and has a curiosity of the what we know, verse what we think the past might have looked like.
I will say, I didn’t remember Jon being quite so bit a brat.
Final but the bullet and got the audio. Can’t say a ‘older’, plummy, English lady is anything close to what I was expecting as a narrator. They definitely should have put more thought into who they chose, but saying that, it wasn’t too bad.
Very descriptive
