Publisher's Summary

'Megan Bannen has created a world that you'll never want to leave and characters that will carve a spot into your heart. This series is playfully unique, delightfully steamy, utterly romantic, and overall unmissable!' Ali Hazelwood

The Princess Bride meets You've Got Mail in this enchantingly quirky, completely refreshing fantasy with a rom-com-worthy premise.

Hart is a marshal, tasked with patrolling the magical wilds of Tanria. It's an unforgiving job, and he's got nothing but time to ponder his loneliness.

Mercy never has a moment to herself. She's been single-handedly keeping Birdsall & Son Undertakers afloat in defiance of sullen jerks like Hart-ache Hart, the man with a knack for showing up right when her patience is thinnest.

After yet another run-in with Merciless Mercy, Hart finds himself penning a letter addressed simply to "A Friend". Much to his surprise, he receives an anonymous reply, and a tentative friendship is born. Little does Hart know he's baring his soul to the person who infuriates him most. . .

Set in a world equally full of magic and demigods as it is donuts and small-town drama, this utterly unique fantasy is sure to sweep you off your feet.

Ok but not great

If you want a light and quirky romantasy and don’t mind the miscommunication trope (a LOT of miscommunication), this book is for you.
It’s an interesting world and concept, but the characters and romance fell flat for me. The main characters are in their 30s, but are incredibly emotionally immature and unable to communicate (with each other or anyone else). It was a hard listen for me, I kept waiting for it to get better and it didn’t.

Unique and quirky

Such a wonderful book, fully fleshed characters, banter and humour, a genuine sob out loud moment. A bit of spice, not fade to black. Loved it. (I only give five stars to the absolute best of the best. This was close)

Unrealised Potential

This had so much potential and could/should have been a great story. Sadly let down by an author unwilling to spend time building the world for the characters or expanding the characters beyond one dimensional 'I hate you, now I love you' - blah. The female narrator was also a disappointment - whether this was because of the lines she was reading or her own inability to sound anything other than dull I don't know.

Fairly bog standard romance

Fairly bog standard romance with a couple of twists. Ok but not sparking, spoilt by jarring world building. Think suburban America transplanted into some other planet.

Hart will steal your heart

I didn't realise this book was going to be fantasy, which really isnt my taste, but i actually really enjoyed the magical world the story happens in! My only real gripe is that Hart is such a great character with a really beautiful story, but Mercy was mostly boring, self-righteous or annoying so I almost wanted to skip her scenes. And her family (specifically her siblings) are absolute a-holes who I hated with a passion. It's a classic romance story of two characters who are bad at commnunicating, but at least I understood where Hart's issues came from. Mercy's just an idiot? The narrators did a great job, but Michael was betterthan Rachanee, probably because Rachanee had nothing to work with with Mercy's garbage character and horrendous family.
