Publisher's Summary

The Twisted Sword is the 11th in Winston Graham's sweeping series of Cornwall, Poldark.

Cornwall, 1815. Demelza sees a horseman riding down the valley and senses disruption to the domestic contentment she has fought so hard to achieve. For Ross has little option but to accept the summons - and travel to Paris with his family as an 'observer' of the French armed forces.

Parisian life begins well, with an exhilarating round of balls and parties. But the return of Napoleon brings separation, distrust and danger to the Poldarks...and always for Demelza there is the shadow of the secret she does not share even with Ross.

Great story, Best narrator!

Of course this is a great story, and incredibly moving many times, but what made this listen an amazing experience is the talent of Oliver J Hembrough. He nails every voice, every personality, every ACCENT with beautiful precision and fluidity. I am amazed at his talent and look forward to hearing more stories narrated by him.

Such a nourishing escape... and lense.

Now I move on to the last in the series: Bella Poldark.

These novels are such a refuge from the ugliness and confusion of our current times
Clearly there was as much mess and overwhelm in the late 1700s n early 1800s... and Graham does not avoid the challenges of that era.
But he portrays the Cornwall (and French) countryside and folk of low and high station with such lush verbal artistry, that I come away seeing more the beauty in my current suroundings and doings much more.

I treasure escaping to the absorbing and beautiful world Graham has fashioned... and the way I find greater value in my "today" his artistry tunes me to.

The loving cup

Although I recommend this book, it is my least favorite in the series thus far. For my taste there was too much detail regarding French history and the war.

Oliver Hembrough is brilliant as usual

I love this series so much. I'm sad that I'm down to just one Poldark book left after this!!
I hope Oliver Hembrough records more books, especially another series. He brings the characters to life in such a way, that I get drawn into the story, more so than just reading them.

Predictable as well as unpredictable.

Loved the continuing saga of the Poldark family. Imperfect heroes, with true to life twists.

As always, an amazing performance

I will not talk about the book since it's the eleventh in the series and if you get this far you obviously like it.
I need to talk about the narrator. When I first bought the series I was very reluctant since I suspected I couldn't listen to that actor because he IS George in the TV series and I hate him.

BUT. He is an AMAZING narrator I don't know how he does it. You forget after a while that it's only one man reading. Voices, accents...the man is a genius and among my top 5 narrators ever.

I will buy any book he reads, are you listening dear Audible?

Excellent

Oliver Hembrough is excellent in his reading of this and the other Poldark books. He does occasionally slip in the pronunciation of a few words, but that's pardonable. A significant error, for lovers of Shakespeare, is the claim that Juliet was 14, whereas she was actually 13.

Just magic. Brilliantly read as always!

Absolutely loved it. I have listened to all eleven books. Oliver certainly brings the story alive. You could imagine you are living in the midst of the drama.

Nowhere near as good as the earlier novels

I still enjoyed this book, it still got me out walking the dog every day and I still think winston graham is underrated as a story teller. But it doesn't compare with the earlier books for sheer nail-biting, edge of the seat suspense and drama. There is still loads to learn about the craft of storytelling, but in some ways for bad reasons - by asking oneself what made the earlier books better.

Another gripping Poldark novel, superb historical context

Gripping, I found it hard to stop listening. I even found myself loitering on the school run, and loving my slow commute.

Fabulous historic context with the Napoleonic Wars, which inspired me to read more on the subject.

The Poldark story itself was sufficiently rich to ensure a good yarn, there are many ends to tie up in the final volume to follow.

Oliver Hembrough continues to totally own the narration of this series. He is the voice of Poldark (and so many more). I lose myself in his dramatic delivery. He is a total genius!

Never fails to write a wonderful story.

Think I enjoyed this more than any of the previous books - and I have loved them all. Oliver J Henbrough once again did a brilliant job.
