About this listen

As the year 1349 approaches, the Black Death continues its devastating course across England. In Dorseteshire, the quarantined people of Develish question whether they are the only survivors. Guided by their beloved young mistress, Lady Anne, they wait, knowing that when their dwindling stores are finally gone they will have no choice but to leave. But where will they find safety in the desolate wasteland outside?

One man has the courage to find out. Thaddeus Thurkell, a free-thinking, educated serf, strikes out in search of supplies and news. A compelling leader, he and his companions quickly throw off the shackles of serfdom and set their minds to ensuring Develish's future - and freedom for its people. But what use is freedom that cannot be gained lawfully?

When Lady Anne and Thaddeus conceive an audacious plan to secure her people's independence, neither foresees the life-threatening struggle over power, money and religion that follows....

A great read. Both books are great, I thoroughly recommend them if you enjoy learning about the history of England

Loved it

I listen to books these days, as l drive in congested traffic for 1 hour thirty each way. So l will start with the narration - it is top notch, the accents done very well, the Latin rolling off the tongue. Nice, very nice.

The story has been made so real that l cant wait to be stuck in my car just to listen to this, you feel ...in situ...ready to defend Lady Anne.

Like many, l will have read this and the first one, Last Hours, because we know Minette Walters to be a very talented author. For me these two books are even better being heard due to that narration. The story is during the time of the plague and is set in the Dorest area of England. I love the ways she closes the gaps between church, learning, faith (or fear) and the needs of people - just loved this. Go for it, you will too:)

Wonderful

A good story set in England during the Black Death of 1348. Good characterisation and well read. Just a little unbelievable towards the end.

Interesting historically

This is the sequel and continues where vol one left off.. I couldn't put it down. The narrator is particularly good and the characters now well known.
My interest is especially with the transition from feudal serfdom to paid employment with the plague devastation as the catalyst.

1340s the saga continues post plague outbreak

Absolutely wonderful, it involved everything a reader could wish for and more. I feel a little empty now it’s finished as the characters were so real.

Brilliant

This is effortless, compelling storytelling that I didn't want to end! A highly creative story with touches of humanity and humour, told by an excellent voice actor. Both books in this series were fantastic. I wish there was a third book...

A marvellous tale
