Publisher's Summary

The earth wants to swallow us whole....

Koli never planned to set foot outside his small village. He knew that beyond its walls lay a fearsome landscape filled with choker trees, vicious beasts and Shunned men. But when he was exiled, he had no choice but to journey out into this strange world where every moment is a fight for survival.

And it's not just Koli's life that is threatened. Whole villages just like his are dying out.

But Koli heard a story, once. A story about lost London and the mysterious tech of the Old Times that may still be there. If he can find it, there may still be a way for him to change his own fate - by saving the lives of those who are left.

The Trials of Koli follow The Book of Koli in the breathtakingly original Rampart trilogy set in a strange and deadly world. Look out for the final novel, The Fall of Koli.

Bring on No. 3

Tbh not a huge amount happens but the world building, characterisation and performances are so strong that it barely matters. I completed the 15 hours in two days so pace is obviously not an issue... Looking forward to the last in the trilogy.

Have read most of the authors other novels and rate them very highly, so got the first Koli in series, now finished second. It feels more of a young adult book.. But still kept listening as very engrossing and thought provoking. The readers do a good job, which is important as it can make or break an audio book. Really enjoyed the addition of Spinner as a narrator. It adds a welcome different perspective and angle. I was left wondering about these characters after the first in series. Spinners narration takes us back to the start of her tale and opens up links with Koli's journey and experiences. I did have an issue with the clumsy and obvious shoehorning of the authors contemporary politics around the use of puberty blockers and children. This felt a bit disengenous to the story. While it completely fit that a 'shunned' character could be gender non conforming and unjustly cast out of a community, it felt that the character's experiences were molded around this point to be scored, and hardly likely in the context of an apocalyptic world. Puberty blocker use on a child is not harmless and fully reversible (see NHS guidance). Needs to be said. Much of the story was setting up the third installment, which I am looking forward to. Koli's cliffhanger was hard to bear. I must know what happens next. I will definitely be introducing my teen son to the trilogy.
