Publisher's Summary

In July 2010, Wikileaks published Cablegate, one of the biggest leaks in the history of the US military, including evidence for war crimes and torture. In the aftermath, Julian Assange, the founder and spokesman of Wikileaks, found himself at the center of a media storm, accused of hacking and later sexual assault. He spent the next seven years in asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, fearful that he would be extradited to Sweden to face the accusations of assault and then sent to US.

At this point, Nils Melzer, UN special rapporteur on torture, started his investigation into how the US and UK governments were working together to ensure a conviction. His findings are explosive, revealing that Assange has faced grave and systematic due process violations, judicial bias, collusion and manipulated evidence. Melzer also gathered together consolidated medical evidence that proves that Assange has suffered prolonged psychological torture.

Melzer's compelling investigation puts the UK and US state into the dock, showing how, through secrecy, impunity and, crucially, public indifference, unchecked power reveals a deeply undemocratic system. Furthermore, the Assange case sets a dangerous precedent: once telling the truth becomes a crime, censorship and tyranny will inevitably follow.

Why aren't all the UK barristers on strike?

A brilliant account by Nils highlighting the political corruption at the top including the UK judiciary. The persecution of JA shows how those in power can influence the legal system for their own political purpose. UK barristers should all be on strike as this case makes the UK legal system a laughing stock. Unfortunate Swedish girls used as pawns to attack JA. Never forget who the real war criminals are. Time to replace corrutable politicians with decentralised power.

Completely changed my perspective

Such a detailed and thorough analysis of the Julian Assange case. I was always pro-Assange but knowing more about the global neglect of due process in this case changes it completely. A must read/listen for all politicians and journalists covering the Assange story as it's clear that things are being hidden from the broad public conciousness that need to be exposed. this is a story about a man fighting for anti-corruption and the corruption of the powerful fighting back. The USA's government needs to be held to account.

Don’t fear the truth

Exposes the truth:
That Julian Assange is not a rapist.
That he never fled Sweden, but gave a statement, DNA & waited a month before leaving.
That the women never went to police alleging rape, but wanting an HIV test.
That Assange never endangered anyone - but alerted authorities when German journalists published names.
That he never hacked into any government systems, but only published information he was given by those with a legal right to access it.
That he didn’t “conspire” with Russians to overthrow an election.
That he isn’t a dirty narcissist- but a brave, steadfast, selfless Aussie hero & legend - holding a mirror up to our own degradation and decline. So what do we do? Say thanks - we’ll deal with those shameful shady dealings? No… our own psychology is used against us to pillory a whistleblower. Our own silence and acceptance of the false narrative allows the failure of the press, failure of our democratic systems and failure of our rule of law to continue its inexorable decline into compliance with illegal executive actions and corruption.
No country is supporting Assange because all of them are complicit in wanting their dirty laundry hidden from view.
Unfortunately, this only hastens the abolition of our once strong safeguards that were exposed by Wikileaks & Julian Assange.
When the system permits an innocent man to be arbitrarily detained indefinitely, while ensuring murderers like Pinochet the benefit of feted freedom we are possibly witnessing the end of a once great system.
Such a shame - for all of us.
All Assange did was show us what we really are, and what our governments really do - murder, torture and lie - and then our legal system set the boundaries for permitting the detention of an innocent man for telling us about it.
Assange just told us the truth…. And we are watching his virtual crucifixion for doing so.
A cautionary tale.

Concerning and compelling

A concerning story about persecution and the abandonment of due process - meticulously researched and told from a UN experts perspective.

Must Read

I am so grateful for this book. This case is so inherently illogical and unbelievably infuriating that I am amazed at how perfectly it has been explained here. I am so very glad that this book was written.
