Publisher's Summary

A dead girl lies on a blood-soaked mattress, her limbs spread in a parody of ecstasy. The scene matches a series of murders which ended with the conviction of Derek Tyler. But Tyler's been locked up in a mental institution for two years, barely speaking a word. Criminal psychologist Dr Tony Hill thinks this is not a copycat murder but something much stranger. Hill heads towards a terrifying face-off with one of the most perverse killers he has ever encountered….

Won't dissapoint

I have heard the name Val McDermid for many years now and I just took the leap for the first time. I am glad that I did.
For the crime and psychological thriller genre, this is good writing.
Terse and fast paced as expected. The characters are well drawn, and the story easy to follow about someone's thrill for tormenting others as the title suggests.
The way it is told, it feels as though you are part of the solving process rather than watching someone do the solving. That was most interesting for me.
At times it was quite perverse and chilling, which is to be expected, but I felt that some sections didn't take the full opportunity to create suspense. Hence the 4 stars.
But this was an otherwise good novel that won't disappoint.

Loving this series

I really enjoyed this book & am already listening to the next one in the series. Love a good series so that the end of the book doesn't mean an end to the enjoyment.

great progression

this story ties up the bomb shell ending of the last book, while forging new ground. can not wait to see (hear) where it goes next

Superb

I remember watching this story as an episode of "Wire in the Blood", a British TV series. The dramatisation of course is not 100% faithful to the book and nothing is as good as the book but both versions are superb.

Why such brutal and devious attacks on women?

I am getting annoyed that there seems to be a race between crime fiction writers on who can come up with the most devious and revolting human behaviour. Generally, the violence is focused on women or children. Why? For me the engagement with a story comes from an interesting story line not through the most heinous crimes. Here we combine both prostitutes are killed in an upsetting way and we also hear about awful crimes against children. I nearly stopped right at the beginning - but kept listening reluctantly more because of inertia than any great hope that the story would develop into something worth listening. Disappointed with Val McDermid and last book by her I’ll listen to.

Disappointing on a number of Levels

I found this story weak and the narration did not work for me with Mr Reichlin failing to provide reasonable accents. It would have been preferable to have true northern and north east accents but better to have none than this half way house.

Enjoyed this one

I enjoyed this fourth book in the Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series, more than the previous three. I think I am getting used to the narrator, and his poor attempts at regional accents bothered me less than previously. This book has plenty of twists and turns and really keeps you guessing right up until the end. A little far fetched in places but I got past that and managed to ignore the silliest aspects which ( to me) stretched believability almost a little too far in places. Great read though. Looking forward to the fifth instalment

Yes although its a bit longwinded

What aspect of Saul Reichlin’s performance might you have changed?

His accents are a disaster, became quite annoying.

Brilliant story, dreadful narration

What a shame about the narration. How did anyone think it was acceptable? His attempt at accents is embarrassing. Thankfully the story is absorbing but it will make me think twice about purchasing any more books this man reads!

A bit predictable

I felt this was a bit of a predictable story in some ways. The narrator still hasn't got his head around differentiating between the voices of the characters in the book - they all sound very similar and it makes picking the book up after a break very confusing (and even if you haven't had a break for that matter!!!)

The plots and story lines are great Val McDermid is an amazing author but the narrator really spoils it!! his geordie accent is atrocious and more welsh

Great Story

Fast paced from the outset. Another Triumph in the series.
The narration is a bit dubious in parts with some of the accents almost laughable. Get past that and you're in for a treat. The now familiar characters are great to follow and the plot is a complex one.

Terrible Narration!!!!

I love These books (Tony Hill)
so persevered but the narration was awful, just not the right voice and some of the accents were appalling!! I’ll just read them in future......
