Summary

Crowner John is summoned to investigate the murder of a tin miner. The victim worked for Devon's most powerful and successful mine owner, Walter Knapman. There seems, to be only one motive - to sabotage Walter's business. But the tinners have their own laws, and they are none too pleased at Crowner John's interference. How on earth can Crowner John sort all this out when his own life is in turmoil?

Unlike others in the series, this one is quite different. Without going into it too deeply, there's a lot of disappointment in the storyline and that tended to have me thinking negatively about the story. Once again though, Bernard Knight has stitched together a very involved storyline encompassing a vast array of characters. Their various escapades and characteristics are skilfully woven in such a way as to draw the reader or listener into the plot so that you cannot wait for the resolution of all things.
