Publisher's Summary
Abandoned and cut off from friendly lines, Stiger takes the fight to the enemy!
A nobleman from an infamous family, an imperial legionary officer, a fighter, and a right proper bastard of a man...
Captain Ben Stiger captured Castle Vrell and rid it of a minion of a dark god. Now he finds himself cut off from the empire, with a hostile rebel army marching on the legion's fortress where they guard the entrance to Vrell Valley. It is not in Stiger's nature to simply wait for the enemy. Badly outnumbered and facing odds greater than 20 to one, he sets out to impede the enemy's advance and show them the steel that the legions are made of.
To help him on his way he has the services of his friend, Eli, one of the last remaining elven rangers. As if matters could not get worse, an army of dwarves is preparing to retake Castle Vrell, a sacred place they name Grata'Kor.
There are forces at play greater than Stiger can imagine. To survive he must contend with not only a well-supported rebel army but also a hostile dwarven nation intent on fulfilling a mysterious prophecy that has the potential to shatter the world and bring ruin to the empire.
The battle to save the empire and the world continues in this action-packed adventure.

Great new series, combining a fictional Roman war with Fantasy. The first book was good, but a bit slow to develop. The author needed time to develop his characters and kills a few off in the action packed second book.

Great new melding of two of my favorite genres.

A great Sequel to a derivative start
This review will be a dual natured review. This book is an improvement to the first novel Stiger’s Tigers. Despite the flaws this series has me hooked. I would consider the flaws minor gripes and nuanced to me. 1 flaw, is the repetitiveness the author uses. There were 3 distinct time the author repeated something... yes, I know already.
The first book was derivative on some actual historical accounts, like the Lost Eagle of the 9th Legion, to sometimes easily alluding to ideas from LotR.
There are other items, and I will say this. One gripe about the first book, was the lack of historical terms for the military components. This book clarifies why the terms and words changed. This book keeps a much better pace than the predecessor. The story in this one is overall better and I was drawn in more into the story and characters. I found myself sometimes, during the first book, being bored.
This one, though, I looked forward to seeing how it would end. I am on to the next one.

Fast-moving Fantasy With Claws!
This series is fast nestling nicely into my “guilty pleasures” category. I am a bit disappointed to see that it hasn’t managed to appeal to greater numbers but I can understand that a fantasy / military history cross-over is not going to appeal to the widest audience. This is however great fun and the second book very much ups the ante from the previous one in terms of non-stop action. Most of the book is spent describing a fabulous fighting retreat by the Tigers which I found very compelling listening.
While there is also a strong fantasy element though that doesn't dominate the action. The book also includes some important scene setting for what promises to be one almighty battle in the next book. The Dwarves are threatening, but for which side is the key question! Either way in this one the action comes thick and fast and it’s all very well narrated by Steven Brand, I think this fast pace within the story line is very well suited to his narration style.
So yes as I mentioned in my review of the opening book this series is a quirky one but if you feel like you want to try something fast-paced and full of action this series feels like a reasonable place to start. I will be there pretty much as soon as the next one is released!

A Great Adventure
Love the reader, he does a great job, keeps it simple. Love the story and the characters. I find it very interesting hearing all the battle tactics. There is a bit of phrasing repetition that makes me roll my eyes at the writer but who cares! that's a tiny thing and the bigger thing is great. Really worth a listen if you like legionnaires mixed with other fantastical races. Love. It.
