British humour at it's best!

Loved this book. The characters were so interesting & funny & the plot was great. Reminded me of Alan Bennett, Talking Heads. Will recommend to everyone I know

2 thumbs up

This was an absolutely delightful story that put more smiles on my face than a murder mystery should. The reader had a great voice, and her way of reading the story added real personality. I can't wait to listen to more books by the author.

surprisingly uplifting!

Having recently enjoyed Lesley Manville reading Anthony Horowitz i thought i'd give this a try -- but i was skeptical of a debut novel by a celebrity. i admit to be being pleasantly surprised.
This isn't quite in the vein of Horowitz who is a master of the whodunnit. it is character-led, focused on residents in an upscale retirement village -- but somehow avoids all the stereotypes of cosy crime and Miss Marplesque busybodying to produce something quite inspiring. This is the elder community we all want to live in and these are the people we'd love be at 80. it is well written, fun, witty and warm.
Not sure how The Sunday Times critic arrived at "reflects society as it is"?! To me there is something magical about it. The characters are substantial enough but they get away with a lot, rarely make a wrong turn and extract confessions remarkably easily, leaving the police a few steps behind. That this is so unlikely -- and yet plausible -- is the charm of this book. Nice chat with Marian Keyes at the end.

Murder done well!

Richard Osman's debut novel is one of the best murder mysteries I've read (okay, listened to). The narration is excellent and the characters are strong and believable. I feel like I've met some of them before, and I live in Australia!

fun, engaging m multilevel mystery

I really enjoyed the setting, the way the story is shared by between the outside narration and Joyce's diary. I love that the police are involved and intelligent and that the retired folk are connected now but clearly with different experiences to contribute to their sleuthing. Elizabeth is very entertaining! I read the second book first but it didn't matter. Excellent choice of narrator.

Wholly satisfying

Richard Osman’s first novel is thoroughly enjoyable, with real and loveable characters. It is full of quiet humour and delicious plot twists. Ms Manville’s performance is ideally suited to the characters. What a great choice to give voice to this entertaining book. I am going hunting for the second book immediately.
