About this listen
The unforgettable thriller from #1 Sunday Times bestselling author Julie Soto, perfect for fans of A GOOD GIRL’S GUIDE TO MURDER and THIRTEEN REASONS WHY.
Jodi never asked to be a Thrasher – a member of the high school elite. But Jodi has been best friends with Zack Thrasher her whole life, and like it or not, that means she’s branded a Thrasher by the rest of the school. And different as she feels to the other four Thrashers – all talented, privileged and beautiful – she can’t help appreciating her social status, especially compared to her violent home life.
But being a Thrasher isn’t worth dying for – except, apparently, it was to Emily Mills. Sweet but intense Emily, whose fixation on Zack brought her close to the in-crowd, but never close enough. Emily, who took her own life on prom night.
When a detective finds a copy of Emily’s diary, there are whispers that she was ‘Thrashed’ – bullied to death by Zack and his gang. They are arrested, charged, and ostracised, their once bright futures extinguished. Then begin the texts from unfamiliar numbers, inexplicable light flares, the run of bad luck that becomes a string of near-fatal accidents… and the constant dreams of Emily.
But something isn’t adding up. The diary is too convenient. In fact, it’s filled with Jodi’s own secrets, repurposed by Emily. But why?
One thing is clear. Emily isn’t done with the Thrashers.

“Julie Soto is a master at giving readers books they cannot put down. The Thrashers is all consuming from page ONE. From the will they-won’t they? To the did they-didn’t they? I read this book in one sitting and then turned right back to the beginning. I held my breath, shouted at the pages, and cried tears for people I’ve never met. Readers will love this book.” – Kristin Dwyer, author of Some Mistakes Were Made
“Expertly plotted and full of flawed, morally gray characters you still can't help rooting for, The Thrashers is one of the best books I've read this year – and that's not hyperbole. Think Veronica Mars with a hint of the unreal. Soto keeps you guessing and turning pages until the last gasp at the very end.” – Evelyn Skye, New York Times bestselling author
“When I say this book had me hooked, I mean “missed my train stop, oh no is that the sun coming up in the window” hooked. I hope I get amnesia so I can read it again for the first time. This chill-inducing, swoon-worthy, hold-your-breath thriller will stick with you long after you turn the last page.” – Emma Lord, New York Times bestselling author of The Rival and Tweet Cute
“The Thrashers is so much more than a gripping, heart-in-your-throat thriller – it's a class commentary with a deeply emotional center that brought me right back to high school. I absolutely inhaled it! The writing is razor sharp, the twists are unpredictable, and the characters are phenomenally layered. Julie Soto is a thoughtful, confident storyteller, no matter the genre.” – Rachel Lynn Solomon, New York Times bestselling author
“A chilling and propulsive page-turner, The Thrashers is a razor-sharp exploration of class, friendships, social hierarchy, and the dangers of desire. Soto delivers complex characters, clever twists, and heart-in-your-throat moments readers will never forget.” – Julian Winters, award-winning author of Prince of the Palisades
On one hand it is written beautifully with that magical finger on your pulse as you devour the book as it seduces you like her previous book and on the other hand…. The way it ends is all wrong. Not just in a “anti-happily ever after’ or a ‘don’t stop there!’ way but in a major moral oversight way. That is then doubled down in a very malicious vindictive ‘full stop’.
I feel betrayed because the story builds upon layers of insecurities and lies within friendships that can spin a fantasy of power and control and how shattering that ‘set’s you free’. Which is essentially woven together and culminating very poetically.
***spoiler alert***
BUT I find it impossible to make any sense of why the relationship between the protagonist(Jodi) and the antagonist(Julian) is not only developed and fulfilled in any satisfactory way but not only does she then hand over the incriminating evidence that sews his conviction lock tight(which is basically an opportunity for her have self-indulgent cathartic martyr moment) and then highlights the antagonist’s character to actually be honourable and completely overlooks his motivation being to protect his friends not an act of callous malice. She the makes a discovery that Emily WAS NOT ONLY FAKING A SUICIDE ATTEMPT SHE WAS ALSO ATTEMPTING A WARPED MALICIOUS ATTEMPT AT BINDING JODI INTO A FALCY OF CONVICTION AND COMMITMENT OF FRIENDSHIP. Oh, and let’s not forget that she very intentionally convinced her sister to keep her conscious for a convincing pretence of suicide. Which not only firmly puts her in the bat sh*t crazy category but also completely destroys the crime Julian both pled and was convicted for as guilty. That being that he had malicious intent to incite her to commit suicide and then succeeded. When that was not only NEVER his intention she NEVER ACTUALLY EVEN INTENDED TO COMMIT SUICIDE LET ALONE DIE.
So, yes, I am both morally offended and feel denied of a fulfilling end that is due when instead of upholding her new ‘brave’ commitment to truth completely ignores the most diabolical fallacy that has had a profound impact not only on a character’s life it will have also have a devastating affect on his character. But, sure, let’s just overlook that fundamentally flawed finale.
And I don’t even have words on the unstable malice in the last 2 minutes that is too deeply disturbing to even consider.
Definitely a worth listen but….

Named by the student body as “The Thrashers”
Know for their narcissistic behaviour, they are renowned for befriending a fellow student,
Letting them into their inner social circle , then, humiliating them by ghosting them.
Only, when they allow Emily Mills into their circle things go pear shaped when she kills herself.
Thus, opening a can of worms when her diary is passed on to the police, only to reveal some of the Thrashers secrets and bullying.
This story centres around Jodie Dylan best friend of Zach Thrasher, and her insecurities as she try’s to figure out who she really is when not around the other five members of the group.
And just what the status is of her relationship with Zach, the boy she has crushed on since second grade.
Will it survive the scrutiny of a police investigation, and the court of public opinion surrounding Emily’s death?
Tense gripping tale, with a touch of Paranormal and one of the best , most delicious, slowest of slow, enemies to lovers ? More like falling IN love narratives I have EVER read.
Ending with one of the creepiest epilogues Ever!!!
Tense, Toxic Friendships, One Dead Girl
