Story
1703. The wild east coast of Scotland. Returning to her home town of Pittenweem, fishwife and widow Sorcha McIntyre knows she faces both censure and mistrust. After all, this is a country where myth and legend are woven into the fabric of the everyday, a time when those who defy custom like Sorcha are called to account. It is dangerous to be a clever woman who 'doesn't know her place' in Pittenweem - a town rife with superstition. So, when a young local falls victim to witchcraft, the Reverend Cowper and the townsfolk know who to blame.

What a great book!
Everything about this book is just incredible. The story is so beautifully written it makes you fall in love with books all over again! The narration was brilliant! I love it when actors read a book - Jenny Agutter made the characters come alive!
Thank you Diane and Jenny!

Possibly the best!
OMG what a wonderful story. I became part of this book. The 13th Tale was a magical journey of words, phrases, sentences that became living characters for me. It will be a long time before I can put this story aside and begin another. Thank you so much for such an amazing experience

A long tale!
You need to pay attention to this one! Easy to get lost and lose your way. Lots of layers but fascinating and disturbing at the same time . I enjoyed “once upon a river “ more

Almost hits the mark
I enjoyed this book and was avidly moving through it enjoying the story and looking to find the ending. But I felt the author almost tried to be a bit too clever and I’m still not really sure i fully grasped or believed the ending. Also I found the part of the story that focuses on the narrator’s own tale to be forced and unnecessary. It didn’t help that the audio production wasn’t great - cutting in at odd places made it clear where recordings had stopped and started overall a good story.

JOY! I wish I could give more stars for this one!
At last, a book l could not put down, but for the need of sleep.
Praise for the author and her mesmerising tale and bouquets and more for the narrator, the wonderful and talented Jenny Agutter whose career l have followed since "The Railway Children" when she was a child, as was l.
I have made comment several times when reviewing a book that the best narrators are actors and so it is with this book. I devoured and loved every word of this twisting, turning tale of twins and the ties that bind them. Jenny's empathetic reading of this sometimes emotional story was a joy and the work of a true professional!
If you read one book this crazy year of 2020 let it be this one! You won't regret it.
