When Rory’s judgmental mother told him that he took after his grandma Evelyn, he took it as a compliment. The ninety-two-year-old cocktail-toting, offtrack-betting party girl was every bit the troublemaker he was. When she landed at a dead-end nursing home, Rory jumped at the chance to liven things up for bored Evelyn - with vodka, scratch-offs, bingo, and gaming.

Story
In 1949, things like this just didn’t happen: A quiet New Jersey resident took a morning walk with a 9 mm Luger pistol. In twelve minutes he murdered thirteen neighbors...and then went back to bed. Howard Unruh went from obscurity to infamy overnight. Even after his obsessive diaries were discovered - a catalogue of simmering rage, petty grievances, and sexual repression - the anomalous crime seemed incomprehensible. Succeeding decades would confirm that Unruh’s “Walk of Death” was just the beginning. The prototype for the modern mass murderer, he would usher in a new age of violence in America.

Publisher's Summary
What would happen if your baby’s birth father stood for everything you despised and feared? In this profound and heartrending story, an adoptive mother is forced to discover the answer.
After years of infertility, Mani and her husband, David, decided to adopt. When they matched with a teen mother, they were overjoyed, until the likely birth father contested. Frank was a violent white supremacist who had no intention of relinquishing parental rights. With tenuous hope and consuming dread, Mani now had to go head-to-head with a hateful stranger. And she was totally unprepared for where it would lead.
Mani Sheriar’s The Third Man is part of This Can’t Be Happening, a collection of four true stories about making the best of a worst-case scenario curated by Kevin Allison, creator of the hit true storytelling podcast RISK! Outrageous, alarming, triumphant, and sometimes embarrassing, these fearless confessionals can be read, or listened to, in one what-on-earth-would-I-do? sitting.

An adoption story best for youthful audiences.
For a very specific target audience this is a sweet little story. If I were a young women struggling with fertility issues or in a family who chooses adoption this would be a good library suggestion. However, for anyone else, it is syrupy sweet to the point of needing insulin to balance the over-the-top depiction of such a picture perfect revelation of acceptance & love.

Poignant
"This can't be happening" is spot on for this book, the most of the four books I've read on this series. It is the author's.nightmare tale of an adoption. I have been through this scenario as the attorney and can testify that all the apprehensions are true. I've also served as a guardian ad litem for children in the system, which can be gut-wrenching. The author's perspective makes the story. Her ability to display compassion in a tough situation is inspirational. The Third Man brings her compassion to the forefront.
