About this listen
A runaway slave. A clever thief. A daring quest for freedom in war-torn England.
In the aftermath of a rebellion against William the Conqueror, northern England lies in ruins, its people scattered and starved. Aelfric, a 14-year-old thrall, flees from his master and stumbles upon a cache of stolen laundry. The thief? Aliwyn, a girl around his age, ostracized for being “cursed.” In her care is a lost toddler she has rescued from the clutches of greedy thrall traders. Forced to cover each other’s secrets, Aelfric and Aliwyn form an unlikely friendship... and maybe something more. They embark on a perilous journey to reunite the child with his family on Easter Sunday and to seek a cure for Aliwyn’s mysterious condition. But time is running out. Aelfric’s master is on the hunt, and the shadows of death loom ever closer over Aliwyn. Will they find the courage and faith to press on, or will their quest end in capture and ruin?

‘A worthy prequel to the much-loved Healer’s Blade, perfect for adventure-loving teenagers!’ - The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
I haven't read this author before but her accomplished writing quickly pulled me into the story. It all felt incredibly authentic. The towns, the people and the language built her world into a legitimate representation of past Britain, with those added creative tweaks to make it unique and a place I'll happily visit (without wanting to live there!!).
Aelfric and Aliwyn are such vulnerable young MC's. I couldn't help but respect their strength in their struggle for freedom. They are appealing, complex and solid characters and their voices are so well crafted as to undeniably be those of young adults trying to survive while remaining true to their morals.
The little found family of Aelfric, Aliwyn and Godwin was the core of the story and their growing bond drove the narrative. The connection between them was written sensitively and allowed to develop carefully, because of the wariness forced onto them by trying events, but felt genuine and full of affection. For young people in a difficult situation (often one trial after another), they showed a lot of consideration and care for each other. Ms Wang put such heart into the connection that I felt all their joys and sorrows with them.
The narrators did a great job bringing the story to life. They were entirely credible as teenagers and both voiced secondary characters well.
I liked this story so much I've now got an ebook, an audiobook and a paperback! I'm looking forward to continuing with the series to see how time changes Aliwyn and Aelfric.
Great story
