Critic Reviews

"[Narrator Stephen] Fry gives Max a perfect plummy voice and has equal fun with colorful supporting characters and ne'er-do-wells. His lovely mix of realistic conversation and pacing, as well as the occasional slow wink, encourages listeners to succumb in pleasure." ( AudioFile)

I can’t believe it has taken me so long to find these stories. They offer such an interesting premise and are really well executed, with perfect narration by Fry.

A new old discovery

Unfortunately I made the mistake of listening to the profound and amazing Sherlock Holmes compilation before listening to Max. I do understand they are different but it’s just hard to beat the detective that changed everything.
Stephen Fry definitely gives this book something special still, like he always does.

No Sherlock

I will admit firstly, that Stephen Fry could read me the phone book and he would have a rapt audience. I like the old fashionedness of these stories, political intrigue, and people taking over the top remedies for their problems. Also there's lots of stories and I listened twice to block out the scary cyclone all through the night. Calming and kind voice.

Ripping good yarns

Love Stephen Fry as the narrator. Quite enjoyed the stories, but sometimes the endings were a bit abrupt.

nice

Pair Stephen Fry with great stories and you can’t go wrong - this one goes on my “listen again” pile.

Story telling at its best
