Publisher's Summary

An unlikely pair on a collision course with trouble.

Bounty Hunter John Smoke never liked the rules. As a result of his overly aggressive - and often illegal - arrest methods, he ended up behind bars. But the Bureau wont’ let him be. Placed in the able care of beautiful, no nonsense, Sidney Shaw, his new FBI handler, Smoke needs to alter his loose-cannon ways to remain a free man.

But there is an unchecked evil festering deep in the heart of the nation’s capital. A shadow conspiracy than won’t be defeated by conventional means. A vast, hidden network of criminals with the terrifying ability to shapeshift into monsters is spreading its supernatural sickness in the very fabric of human society.

No ordinary mortal can fight the evil. But, there is nothing ordinary about John Smoke. Sidney Shaw is about to discover for herself as she follows Smoke’s trail into the darkest, most secret corners of Washington, DC. Smoke and Sidney must fight the evil that will stop at nothing to tear them apart while destroying a nation as well.

If you like Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files and shows such as the X Files and Supernatural, then this dynamic pair is just for you!

good but over the top

this series was okay. the narrator does a good job with different voices for each character but i started loosing interest after 25hrs or so. it got to predictable and over the top for me. still finished the series but was really looking forward to another book which is not my normal as i normally wish the book would never end.

Gripping

This series is well developed a tad drawn out in places and took a while to get going, particularly in the beginning but in the latter books finally got some steam in the storyline.
I recommend this book to those that like fantasy and to persevere as the end is worth the wait

loved it

loved the ups and downs all the way through. Could have done with a little more romance but I enjoyed how it ended up. Also characterisation from the narrator was awesome she is great at accents.

Fight The Good Fight!

OK. I'll make this simple. And trust me. it is simple. To sum it up- Smoke is John Wick, but add some charm and charisma. Sidney Shaw is as stiff as a log whose laser eyes will bore you through if you cross her...which also has a HUG trust issue (yet can't trust herself in trusting a handsome convict who's appetite comes with pancakes and milk shakes). Take those two, and throw them in a blend of the X-Files, two bounty hunters, and the Black List. And what do you have? PURE. AWESOMENESS!

Holly Adams. Well, I tell ya. You don't come by that many awesome narrators who will throw in Awesome voices, Engrosses you in not only the book, but you LIVE the character. Hands down. Awesome job Holly!

Also, there is a bit of strong swearing.

Other than that, better hope that you have extra PTO cause you may, in fact, become a deader...so beware!

Not a dull moment!

I thoroughly enjoyed this collection. I must admit that I fail to give many reviews because I am too excited to start my next book most of the time. That being said, I had to let everyone know how worthwhile I found this credit was spent. I am honestly bummed to be finished with the entire collection. What an adventure!

Good plot line, however writing was childish

I really struggled with this story. I liked the premise of the story as I think the plot was good, which is the only reason I persevered to listen to all 10 books as I felt the actual writing and character development were childish. Perhaps if if the plot line had been given to another writer they might have done a better job.
Listening to the first chapters was the hardest when it seemed a 14yr old boy had attempted to write a female character and what he thinks the inner workings of a woman's thoughts are.
The constant immaturity of Sydney desiring Smoke but outwardly treating him as though he had cooties was draining.
Once Sydney and Smoke actually got together, it was like a different character had stepped in and started to make more jokes, movie references and lewd comments.
The performance of the narrator was good, character voices were clearly defined, however the 'sound effects' were tiresome and comicbook like.
Every gunshot was 'blam blam' or 'budah budah', I'm surprised we didn't hear others like 'pow', 'bam', 'smack' every time there was a fight scene.
I don't know if the effects were written in the actual book for if the narrator took creative license but it was distracting and annoying.
Throughout the story I yelled at my car speakers more than once at the ridiculousness of some situations.
If your looking for a listen which is not meant to be taken seriously at all and will frustrate you, then this is the book for you!

I kept trying - i wanted to like this

I really wanted to like this book. But I kept getting bored and the very slow pace of the narration - not every word requires a drawn slow pronounciation. Might be better if I sped up the pace.. but after 6 hours .. i just didn't care much anymore. I am sorry - because the first book was ok - the second just could not hold me.

Reads like a romance novel half the time

Not terrible, but if you want something with depth or don't enjoy sitcom level dialogue, look elsewhere.

DNF

DNF after 2 hours.

The dialogue is so campy and unnatural. I kept expecting something supernatural to happen but it never did. Just really cringe worthy dialogue. The acting makes the characters seem even more unnatural than the words. At first I was torn between continuing or not because it's 48+ hours for 1 credit, but then I asked myself, "Do I really want to listen to 46 more hours of this?" The answer was heck no.

Loved it

The storyline has just enough surprises not to be predictable. The narration sells it. The voices are great.

An Author Redeemed!

If you previously read or listened to Mr. Halloran's "The Darkslayer Omnibus" and are thinking of passing on this title, please read this review.

It takes an extraordinary person to be open to criticism, especially when the person being criticized is a published author. Yet, that is how I came to listen to this series. I left an honest, critical review of another of Craig Halloran's works, "The Darkslayer Omnibus," here on Audible. I was extremely surprised when Mr. Halloran reached out to me, enquiring as to whether I was the same Andrew James Riemer who had left the critical review. Reluctantly, I admitted it was I who had left it. In hindsight, I am very glad that I did.

Mr. Halloran legitimized some of the criticisms I had made of that work (some of which were around the production and narrator, beyond the writing style), and asked if I would be willing to listen to some of his other works so as to redeem himself in my eyes (or ears, as it may be). I agreed, and chose to listen, first, to his Supernatural Bounty Hunter series. I was not disappointed.

I must admit, however, that I have never been a big fan of detective stories or similar works. I was not sure I could get past my own biases when listening to the story, but I decided to make a concerted effort to be fair.

This series fulfilled all the promise I could see in Mr. Halloran's earlier work. The characters are memorable and unique. The world carries a balance between reality and fantasy that is sometimes lost in creative works. I found myself rooting for Sid and Smoke throughout. There were a few plot twists that I felt were predictable, yet there were others that caught me by surprise. All in all, the delightful characters and the world Mr. Halloran created dwarf any criticisms I could make. I found myself longing for each subsequent installment in the series, and found myself lamenting after I reached the end.

The performance of this series is marvelous. Holly Adams brought life and voice to the characters in a way that made them even more endearing. This, itself, was a significant shift from the narration of the Darkslayer Omnibus. Had Ms. Adams narrated that other work, I may well have found it far more enjoyable.

So, whether or not you have listened to Mr. Halloran's other works, I encourage you to give this one a listen. I believe you will find it quite endearing and enjoyable.

Long listen

Good bang for your buck as you get over 48 hours of audio. The story is fairly typical and so are the characters. By this I mean the characters are very stereotypical as is the story. Now this is not a bad listen, IMHO it's "OK". They story and characters were good enough for me to finish, but, there was not a time where I was surprised, intrigued, or felt any kinship to a character. The mythos was somewhat different, all the baddies are shifters who align with certain groups such as vampires or werewolves and so on. The good guys, agent Sidney Shaw(tough as nails and a straight shooter to boot), and bounty hunter John Smoke(mysterious and physically gifted) are two uber good looking and multi talented people who form and unlikely team to take down all the baddies. I gave this listen an overall of 4 stars because it was free, a complete set, and just good enough for me to listen to.

Great idea but...

I liked the story line. But the narrator was way over the top. She was good with voices and sound effects but her narration for the main character was overly intense.
Quite off putting.

A good listen

I really enjoyed listening to this series. There are a lot of plot improbabilities and it's never going to be a 'classic'. The characters are engaging, the pace is fast but it's a bit like watching an entertaining tv series that's guaranteed to please but will never fully stretch the mind. The character dynamics are fairly standard with a female protagonist who likes to stick to the rules, plan and keep her life under control falling for a male protagonist who is spontaneous, impulsive and breaks the rules without remorse or compunction. The good guys are 'good' and the bad guys are 'bad' and there are no big surprises.

It you want something light, entertaining and engaging then this is an excellent buy.
