Throws you right into the latest Mission Impossible for our families heroes, not much in the way of backstory of the past 12years but child rearing and financial hardship is hinted and doesn’t hold much intrigue really anyway. The new villainous characters are balanced well with my sentimental attachment to the old heroes and anti heroes. Honestly - this one is so full of betrayal I can’t say anymore!

I love Ian Irvine and have read all his Three Worlds books. This was my first audiobook and I really enjoyed the narration. It was clear and easy to understand, built excitement in the more thrilling scenes, and I really enjoyed all the character voices which were nicely different and I felt they suited the characters. That said, it was kind of funny to listen to a man say “mummy” in a child’s voice! Really good narration.

Now as for the story, I read an interview once where Irvine describes his style of writing as putting his characters into worse and worse situations and somehow writing them out of it. Sometimes this will leave your frustrated and feeling like can’t something go right just once please?! But it makes their victories and success all the more satisfying.

It was great going back to Santhenar and learning more about the magic and history of things. I loved seeing some old favourite characters again, and also really loved the new ones too! Really good mix of male and female protagonists - strong and brave, but also weak and flawed. No one is black and white in Irvine’s writing.

I definitely recommend this one, but only after reading his A View from the Mirror series, or it won’t make much sense.
