My name is Hope Arden. I am the girl the world forgets.

It started when I was 16 years old.

A father forgetting to drive me to school. A mother setting the table for three, not four. A friend who looks at me and sees a stranger.

No matter what I do, the words I say, the crimes I commit - you will never remember who I am.

That makes my life tricky. It also makes me dangerous....

The Sudden Appearance of Hope is the tale of a girl no one remembers, yet her story will stay with you for ever.

Bad :(

Sadly, this was the worst book I've read so far in my honest opinion. I was hoping it would be as good as the description sounded. Very disappointed and I couldn't even try to finish it. I found the storyline absolutely ridiculous and didn't like the voices.

Interesting premise but struggled to finish

There are some interesting and original as well as disturbing ideas but it tended to drag on in places and never seemed to end

Returned this book

I found this so hard to get into, not least because of some glaring factual inaccuracies about one of the countries the main character was in. The plot jumps around and the characters are not engaging. I do not normally give up on a book and am a prolific reader but I couldn’t continue with this. I don’t think the narration also worked for me, her voice was ok but the flipping between accents grated.

Incredible musings of a forgotten mind

Of loneliness, of history, of meaning, of worth, of self, of truth.

Do yourself a favor and read this.

I tried to finish it. Went into a depression so had to stop. Droning narrator.

Disappointing

I'd just read a novel by Claire North (Touch) thought I'd like some more of her work; oh dear, by the half-way point I'd lost the will to keep listening, so good in bits but meanders forever, tedious and a drain, I finally gave up waiting and hit Delete.

Beautifully written!

Deep, interesting, beautiful! Reads more like a poem than a novel. Thoroughly enjoyed my time with hope - nothing like I've ever read before, absolutely breathtaking! Narration was fantastic too - deep rich voice to get lost with, brought the story and characters to life.

Brilliant premise

I didn't enjoy the writing style Claire adopted for this novel although the whole concept and in general terms the plot was genius.

Not quite hitting the spot

When the story is actually happening it's interesting. I found it hard to get past what could only be described as a heavy peppering of really bad poetry at every emotive opportunity.

This book had a lot of good ideas but I find myself looking at it like a cake someone decorated poorly, thinking what a shame. At least it tastes nice.

Another great concept from Claire North

She's very clever is Claire North. She writes about people with believable but unconventional superpowers. And she writes about them with pathos and humanity.
This one is about Hope, the woman who everyone forgets.
The performer isn't the best but the novel is riveting.

Brilliant concept and intellectually challenging

I thought the premise for this story was brilliant. Very well written, and read, sometimes quite poetic. It challenges the listener on many levels and you really need to listen. In places I found it's quite profound and philosophically challenging about our perception on trust, friendship and self.
It's also a fun and engaging international thriller / mystery. Love it.

Great concept, but overdone and overlong

Would you try another book written by Claire North or narrated by Gillian Burke?

I probably wouldn't try another book by Claire North. I'd be open to listening to Gillian Burke narrating something else.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I enjoyed reading a book with so many interesting female characters. The characterisation in general was very good.

What aspect of Gillian Burke’s performance might you have changed?

The Scottish accents. I'm surprised these were so poor because she was otherwise a good narrator.

Was The Sudden Appearance of Hope worth the listening time?

Yes and no. It was a great story but far too long and repetitive. I started out not wanting to stop listening, but some time later my heart sank to hear the announcement of chapter 103 and I wondered if it was ever going to end. I was tired of hearing the same ideas discussed over and over, which left little for the listener to muse on for themselves. If this had been edited to two-thirds of the length, or even less, it would have been more enjoyable and thought provoking.
