Publisher's Summary

Michael was in a hurry. He was scrambling up the ladder at Drake & Sweeney, a giant D.C. law firm with 800 lawyers. The money was good and getting better; a partnership was three years away. He was a rising star with no time to waste, no time to stop, no time to toss a few coins into the cups of panhandlers. No time for a conscience.

But a violent encounter with a homeless man stopped him cold. Michael survived; his assailant did not. Who was this man? Michael did some digging, and learned that he was a mentally ill veteran who'd been in and out of shelters for many years. Then Michael dug a little deeper, and found a dirty secret, and the secret involved Drake & Sweeney.

The fast track derailed; the ladder collapsed. Michael bolted the firm and took a top-secret file with him. He landed in the streets, an advocate for the homeless, a street lawyer.

Critic Reviews

"Fluent and fascinating. Few writers have so much to say, the skills to make reading what they say an irresistible pleasure -- and the clout to be able to say it to an audience of millions." ( Independent)

Average book

It was alright. I loved the research and including the homeless but it felt there should have been a few extra mini stories should be included, like Ruby.

I also didn't like the narrator. His voice seemed too old for a guy in his early thirties and I didn't like how he stretched many of his words.

A engrossing morality story

This is certainly one of Grisham’s better books which I thoroughly enjoyed. It has many of the author’s hallmarks: the descriptions of the crushing work-load endured by ambitious lawyers; cynicism over the money-making tactics; and best of all the pitting of the little man against the hugely wealthy, big law firms.

After a gripping start as 8 lawyers are held captive in fear of their lives by a homeless man, the book transforms into a morality tale when one of them experiences an Epiphany that changes his life from being a high-flying corporate lawyer into one paid little working with a small group of street lawyers trying to solve the legal problems of the homeless. After he discovers that an employee of his old firm has engaged in an illegal action against some homeless people the pace of the book takes off as street lawyers take on the big law firm, with some surprising results.

The narrator is first class.

Even the sublime Frank Muller couldn't save this.

Would you try another book written by John Grisham or narrated by Frank Muller?

Have most of Grisham's books. Sadly Frank Muller has passed away.

Would you ever listen to anything by John Grisham again?

Yes, without a doubt. This one just isn't his best.

Which character – as performed by Frank Muller – was your favourite?

None of the characters really stood out, I'm afraid.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Borderline boredom.

Any additional comments?

No.

Easy listening

Endearing story . Reader is descriptive and fails to capture the emotion in the characters. Enjoyed the story line and wanted to keep reading

Simply fantastic

I'm slowly working my way through John Grisham's novels after a hiatus of 25 years. Audible sets them alive especially with the narration by Frank Muller. His tone and delivery are joyous to listen to. Simply fantastic

A great listen, one of the best

Absolutely top class listen. I listened to it all.over again the moment it finished. I'm very surprised to hear of any negative reviews, which may be because they didn't give it a chance. The story starts strong, gets going immediately, and stays strong and engaging throughout, a tale of morality with everyday heroes to admire and aspire to. I listened without my mind ever wandering, keen to get back to it. The narrator gives an earnest performance which suits the story. His accents are perfect, his inflections just right to describe the feeling intended, and you know exactly who is talking at all times. I highly recommend this book as an unusual story by Grisham who is at his best here. You're in good hands.

Solid legal Grisham

I enjoyed it but it wasn’t gripping as some of Grisham’s stories have been. Some thought provoking homelessness storylines.
