About this listen
Some secrets will drag you under...
Edinburgh reporter Doug McGregor is no stranger to breaking the news. But when his editor is shot dead by a sniper in front of him, Doug becomes part of the headline.
His close friend and cop DS Susie Drummond orders him to stay out of the investigation, so Doug retreats to Skye, seeking solace from his old mentor’s fate.
But peace isn’t waiting on the island for Doug. Another murder in Edinburgh, which Doug suspects is linked, forces him back into the fray. Skye is no longer a sanctuary but a sniper’s hunting ground. And Doug may be the next target before he can expose the truth...
The Storm is the second book in the McGregor & Drummond series, starring a tortured journalist and a driven detective. Perfect for fans of Ian Rankin, Stuart MacBride, JD Kirk and Chris Brookmyre’s Jack Parlabane novels.

My biggest gripe is the character of Susie. She's made into an incompetent and rather stupid cop, while Doug is the one with the intelligence to solve things. She's just running along after him like a little puppy as he does hints and tips for her along the way. And the women in the book are really one dimensional characters. And of course all the lovely eligible c young women are in love with Doug. Cause no cosy crime series is complete without women falling at the feet of the male hero. This series would be so much better if Susie, and Rebecca for that matter, were decent, intelligent (and not struggling with self confidence female characters),, NOT automatically in love with Doug!
Another cosy, rather juvenile crime series. Murder is just for entertainment, there's very limited suffering or trauma discussed in an adult manner. It's typically just obliquely discussed, and doesn't generate any discomfort or sadness in a reader. (One reviewer wrote about too much gore - I've no idea what they're talking about! None of this had any realistic mention or discussion of murder. The word blood was mentioned, so if that's gore to you then this book may not be your thing.)
Characters are good. I don't really feel like we're part of their world though, it's too 1 dimensional for that. The actual plot is silly and nothing like real life. And there's no true police procedural element. It's just 2 characters running around talking to people. No realistic dogged,& difficult police work like you'd see in an Unforgotten episode.
This book/series is like a Midsomer Murders TV show episode. Cosy crime just for entertainment, & with no actual adult treatment of the horrific things that supposedly happen. So if you'd rather watch MM instead of a far more mature Scandi Noir series, then you'll probably enjoy this book.
Ok story, though unrealistic, and too many cliches & illogical plot points to be good.
