Publisher's Summary

A detailed look into and an eye-opening account of the Spanish flu and what can we learned from it.

Have you always been curious to learn about the Spanish flu?

Are you looking for a book that will detail the history of the Spanish flu, including how it spread and how the world reacted as a result?

If you answered “yes” to both of these questions, keep reading.

The Spanish flu was the worst pandemic the world has ever seen next to the bubonic plague of 1346. About 500 million people were infected by it, and between 25 to 50 million lost their lives. It occurred toward the end of the First World War, which lasted between 1918 -1920.

This book revisits the Spanish flu in a unique way, starting with a brief scientific explanation of the virus and then going deeper to explore its historical context.

In this amazing book, you’ll learn:

  • What is the scientific classification of the Spanish flu, what was the Spanish flu, and how it evolved from an epidemic to become a global pandemic
  • What are the classification types of various influenza illnesses, when are they most likely to occur, and what are some of the medical measures to counter it
  • Where did the Spanish flu originate, how was it transmitted, what was the pattern it adopted as it mutated, and which communities did it affect
  • How the world governments reacted to the pandemic, what measures were taken to counter it, and how it was finally brought control
  • Lessons learned from the Spanish flu pandemic

The Spanish flu was a tragedy on a massive scale, but it also left in its trail the blueprint of how we all should respond to similar future events. Studying the pattern of how the virus mutated and how it travelled to various countries and which communities it affected is incredibly useful for any researcher. This book highlights all these questions and more in much detail, so we can increase our awareness of the event and be prepared to better deal with the current pandemic and any future ones.

A very hauntingly interesting book

The book begins by explaining our medical history over the last 2,000 years. It lays out where the medical practice began, with Hippocrates, and how it advanced through the years. A very hauntingly interesting book about the miracles of modern medicine and how we made it through the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918-1919.

If you have an interest in the 1918 pandemic

If you have an interest in the 1918 pandemic, this is the book for you. It contains substantial detail to absorb, or the listener can focus on specific manifestations of the pandemic. Such as the stupidity of Wilson’s ignoring of the science, the media’s role in the matter, and how timid or corrupt leaders can really harm us.

This book was truly amazing

The structure of the book is surprising at first. It introduces the start of the flu, then veers off into a discussion of medicine before and during that time. It is instructive but left me wondering when we would get to the main story.

Well concept and well researched

I highly recommend this book so you can understand what is happening in the future with virus infections. The parallels are both instructive and disturbing. It seems as though our political leaders learned nothing while the scientific community's warnings went unheeded much like 1918.

Useful, up-to-date analysis

This is an intelligent, short account of the 'Spanish' flu pandemic of a hundred years ago. It even draws enlightening comparisons with the current Covid-19 pandemic, pointing out lessons that should have been learned from the Spanish Flu pandemic.

Excellent thorough account of the 1918 pandemic

This is the quintessential book about the 1918 pandemic, recorded from a science history point of view. It is thorough and will acquaint the listener with the major people and institutions that transformed American medicine in the late 19th and early 20th century. People looking merely for a human interest emphasis might find this level of detail overwhelming, but if you really want to understand the full story in context and in detail, this is the book.

Overall very clear concepts

Just finished this fascinating first book and know about the Deadliest Pandemic in History and How It Changed the World. The author not only discusses the flu pandemic of 1918-1920, but also discusses other pandemics and epidemics and how world leaders down-played each of these health plagues.
