Publisher's Summary

The Sober Entrepreneur is an unedited tale of Russ Perry's journey from the bottom of the bottle to the top of an eight-figure empire in less than three years. Discover the ultimate life hack on living life to its fullest potential. This audiobook's powerful tale will uncover the exact steps Russ took to forever change his family tree.

Our relationship with alcohol can be complicated, to say the least. Most of Western civilization has glorified the experience into the upper echelons of social agreements, yet millions of us struggle with the substance.

For the married entrepreneur, things are only more difficult. As pressures mount from our home, family relationships, and business demands, addictions are rampant - addiction to alcohol, substances, and, even worse, finding ourselves addicted to a professional prison of our own creation.

The Sober Entrepreneur is a powerful book uncovering one person's journey from the pits of rock bottom and through his commitment to the ultimate life hack: sobriety. Russ Perry shares an unedited account of his decision to quit drinking and break the cycle of addiction with his dysfunctional business.

Perfect timing for me & my entrepreneurial journey

I purchased this physical book a while ago because I've admired the author's ability to build an amazing business and share his secrets along the way on various interviews and podcasts. I wasn't sure when I'd get around to reading it but knew eventually the time would come when it felt like the right time in between business books as I'm finally making the moves to finally act on my entrepreneurial tendencies. The timing on the audiobook release couldn't have been a better reminder that NOW was the time I needed it most. This panic and pivoting happening around the current pandemic has me self medicating more than I'd like to admit as it just seems even more normal these days. Not only that, but I’ve been lying to myself about alcohol for years. I joke about it not being useful, but never give it it’s due credit when I should. I’m not exactly sure where I’ve had it on my list of habits to remedy but it certainly was never next. Thanks Russ, for making an excellent case not just for what’s unhelpful about even a few drinks to take the edge off, but for why it needs to come before all the coaching other habits I’ve been looking to level up. Getting up early and eating right from the beginning are 2 things I’ve been failing at consistently even as I’ve learned how to double my income multiple times. I’ve definitely been sacrificing myself as I make this journey and I can feel how vulnerable so many things are as I take on new risks. Drinking has been a desired escape from the grind and a seemingly great excuse to network with other entrepreneurs pretending not to work as they socialize and look for their next opportunity. An interesting thing I learned about myself while I read and now listened to this book was that while “rock bottom” is certainly a thing that works to redirect a drinker, it doesn’t have to be. I didn’t think a logical case would be one to work on someone like me. Afterall, I’ve seen Food Inc, and I still like fast food from time to time. Come to think of it, it’s usually while I’m making other bad health decisions. This audiobook was a refreshing listen and the perfect length of time. I appreciate the transparency and candor of the experience and could relate to much of what was said along the way. Especially how it ties into being a businessman, husband, and father at the same time. I’ve been looking for a way to find time and funds for business & life coaching and what better way then just to get out of my own way with this one thing. You most definitely don’t have to be at a “bottom” to make the decision like this, but getting to the bottom of your deep personal “why” certainly helps, and journaling is way easier in the morning after a good night’s rest. Thanks for sharing your personal journey Russ. Admiring your journey along my way and looking forward to the path ahead of this fork in the road.

Inspiring & Motivational

I read the hardcopy of this book a couple of years ago and enjoyed it then. However the audio version was twice as good. Russ' story and advice comes across to be very genuine, and practical. And even though he's not a 'professional' narrator he delivers the book to you as if you were sitting across from him in a coffee shop and just having a chat. I really enjoyed that approach. If you want to change things for the better in your world (even if your not an addict) this is worth the listen. I highly recommend.

Russ’ Passion is Contagious

With the current pandemic going on, I couldn’t wait to read a book that shared a true story about how Russ climbed up from being so down in his life. Each chapter was a huge reflection on my purpose and what I actually wanted from life as a whole. As a mom of three and a startup entrepreneur, balance and focus are things I’ve been working on for a while so Russ’ methods were practical and made a lot of sense, but with consistency and persistence being key. I like his idea of having a coach or mentor along the journey to help with this. If you’re like me and always striving to get more time in the day, you’ll get inspired by Russ’ story, I promise.

Accessible and full of great ideas (even if you’re not an alcoholic)

Even if your life doesn’t perfectly overlap with the surface image of an entrepreneur struggling with addiction, there is truth, encouragement, and a little butt-kicking for you in this book. It’s giving me pause to re-evaluate myself as a leader and husband, as well as asking myself what benefit alcohol brings to my life. From physical health to sleep to work to mental health to relationships, there are numerous nuggets in here to chew on and push yourself to be better. Glad I listened.

Great read!

Having built up a few businesses myself, I found myself reading, ie listening, to this book, with my jaw on the floor. Start-ups alone are an uphill battle but doing so during recovery(!), with a family(!) adds an entire other layer to an already complex mission. Perry doesn't sugar coat his addiction or the struggle that comes with building a business-he goes deep, gets honest and ultimately provides the blueprint for his success. You don't have to be contemplating sobriety or a start up to enjoy The Sober Entrepreneur but if you're dipping your toe in either pond then you'll for sure want to add this one to your library.

I hate this guy!

Okay, I don't really hate the author, but there is no doubt that he is doing many of the things in life that I want to be doing so I can't help but hate him a little bit. He does give a really practical glimpse into how he got there, which is pretty cool. Good read for some profound insights.

Listen.

Awesome book by a talented guy who knows what real work is but also knows how to get a higher ROI out of his time. Been following Russ for awhile as it's hard to find entrepreneurs in their 30's with such solid insight into life and business. Easy to listen to in one session and worth it.

Powerful/Practical

Profound insight. The story structure kept the book engaging and the advice was actionable. Russ delivers again.
