Story
In North Devon, where the rivers Taw and Torridge converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his father's funeral takes place. The day Matthew turned his back on the strict evangelical community in which he grew up, he lost his family, too. Now he's back, not just to mourn his father at a distance but to take charge of his first major case in the Two Rivers region, a complex place not quite as idyllic as tourists suppose.

Story
News of the murder first came to Inspector Stephen Ramsay early on Monday morning. They found the strangled body of farmer Ernie Bowles lying on his kitchen floor. The gruesome discovery had first been made by Lily Jackman, a new-age traveller who was living with her boyfriend in a caravan on Bowles' land. Then another person is strangled, a woman who, on the surface, had absolutely no connection with the dead farmer. Surely two such killings in the same locality are more than just chilling coincidence.

Oh dear.
I love Ann Cleeve's books! But, oh dear, what happened with this one? Crowded with characters, none of whom are particularly memorable. I honestly could not follow the story as I had to keep trying to remember who was who. The narration was just so-so and did nothing to improve this rather boring tale. I kept falling asleep.

Not her best....
If you love the Shetland series, be warned - this is nothing like them. To each their own but I found the characters in this tedious tale completely one-dimensional and not one of this sorry crew made me want to either know them more or like them. Each of them, to me, was like a cardboard cut out - almost interchangeable. I don't blame the narrator - he did as well as could be expected with this long-winded (or so it seemed) boring tale and flat caricatures. As winding as the plot was, I still guessed the end long before it came. I'm usually sorry to come to the end of a good book but I was quite relieved when this one gave its last groan......

Good new lead character
I hope this may be the beginning of another enjoyable series from Ann Cleeves starring Peter Porteous. Interesting plot with a twist at the end I'd not spotted (which is unusual). I am not handing out my 5 star awards as often these days to better distinguish for myself as well as others between a good listen and something outstanding. This deserves its 4 star and is recommended to those who like a good who dun it.

Nearly very good but ultimately disappointing.
This has the makings of a very good story, it has some excellent ideas, but it never quite takes off. Nor does it hang together satisfactorily. Some of the characters are extremely tedious and the motives for various behaviours contrived and unrealistic. It is plot rather than character driven and suffers as a result. The plot itself is over complicated and rather shaky in places. I looked forward at each stage to finding out what would happen only to rapidly lose concentration and fall asleep. None of it easily make sense and trying to follow what’s going on becomes too much like hard work. The ending is extremely rushed and I’m not sure we ever find out who murdered Carl. Maybe if I can summon the will I’ll go back and listen again to see if I missed it.
