About this listen

An extraordinary analysis into the mind of a notorious killer which set the standard in true crime writing.

An unspeakable crime.

When he was arrested in July 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer had a severed head in the refrigerator, two more in the freezer, two skulls and a skeleton in a filing cabinet.

A deprived act.

But if anything could be more disturbing than the brute horror of this scene, it was the evidence that Dahmer had been using these human remains not only for sexual gratification but as part of a dark ritual of his own devising - to furnish a shrine to himself.

A killer beyond our understanding.

The Shrine of Jeffrey Dahmer offers a chilling insight into the mind of a serial killer and reveals the horrors within.

Perfect for fans of Making a Murderer, Mindhunter and The Ted Bundy Tapes, this is a gripping and gruesome listen that delves into the mind of a murder and what possesses someone to kill.

I was long waiting for this to come to audible. I was not disappointed. it's an amazing insight to one of modern histories most infamous criminals. I highly recommend!

utterly incredible

I had no idea that Dahmer was capable of doing these acts. I thought I knew everything about him but I obviously didn't. Depending on how strong your stomach is you'll either live this or hate it.
I loved it

I knew the basics of this case but this book really dives into the more disturbing details of the murders. I find at times it can go off track and get into the psychology behind the crimes rather than being purely based on the crimes themselves. The last few chapters focus not as much on the crimes and instead the psychology and history of necrophilia as a whole.

Overall the book is incredibly disturbing and does go into quite graphic detail about the murders. It’s hard to believe this actually happened and my thoughts go out to the families of the victims who had to lose their loved ones in such horrific and unbelievable circumstances.

There's some good food for thought here particularly around nature vs nurture and compulsion vs orchestration. It's easy to follow and doesn't spare the gory details which I feel most true crime readers will appreciate. Jonathan Keeble is a fantastic narrator however one thing I found a little off-putting is the terrible attempt at American accents when quoting. It's really not necessary. There's plenty of information from a number of sources on Dahmer and I'm not really sure if this manages to break any new ground but it was an interesting read nonetheless. It's somewhat of a first hand account as the author was present in the court hearing.

Thoroughly researched with interesting insights
