In the background, a different president is in power, and a different spirit hangs over the country, while in the foreground the family fights over what they call their farm, on a worthless piece of land outside Pretoria. Story
Born from a long line of female warriors and crusaders, yet too coarse, too wild, too rough-hewn for courtly life, Marie de France is cast from the royal court. Woefully, she is sent to the muddy fields of Angleterre to take up her new duty as the prioress of an impoverished abbey. The abbey is a dreadful place: its inhabitants are on the brink of starvation, beset by disease, stoic and stern, yet plagued with an unholy tendency to gossip. Marie cannot help but pine for the decadence and comfort of France, her secret lover Cecily, her queen Eleanor and the court that had spited her.

Publisher's Summary
Shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2022
Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Night Watchman
In this stunning and timely novel, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning author Louise Erdrich creates a wickedly funny ghost story, a tale of passion, of a complex marriage and of a woman's relentless errors.
Louise Erdrich's latest novel, The Sentence, asks what we owe to the living, the dead, to the reader and to the book. A small independent bookstore in Minneapolis is haunted from November 2019 to November 2020 by the store's most annoying customer. Flora dies on All Souls' Day, but she simply won't leave the store. Tookie, who has landed a job selling books after years of incarceration that she survived by reading 'with murderous attention', must solve the mystery of this haunting while at the same time trying to understand all that occurs in Minneapolis during a year of grief, astonishment, isolation and furious reckoning.
The Sentence begins on All Souls' Day 2019 and ends on All Souls' Day 2020. Its mystery and proliferating ghost stories during this one year propel a narrative as rich, emotional and profound as anything Louise Erdrich has written.

The door is open - walk through
This is a superb book, superbly read. This gentle, intelligent voice takes you on a journey of love, loss, fallibility, caring, and honesty; of facing hard truths in a way that is true to the protagonist.
I have never read a book by this author before, but will now seek out everything she has written.
She has introduced me to the immediacy of the modern North American First Nations people through the eyes of a strong and warm woman who is working to find a way through being part of two cultures, fighting to plant her feet solidly on the earth, and to find a place for compassion and love in this time of chaos, extreme politics, and uncertainty.
A strong story, gently told.

Indescribably great
I can’t begin to express how much I loved this book. It is a masterpiece. The story was compelling and the characters warm and real. The author’s use of words was artistic and emotional. I laughed and cried and was furious and wistful. I loved Tookie so much. A complicated, flawed woman who was spiritual and troubled and strong. So good. Can’t recommend it more highly.

Pertinent, complex, astounding
This is a brilliant novel from a master storyteller. It deals with all of the urgent issues contemporary western societies need to face and are facing now. Indigenous rights, Black Lives Matter, the over representation of minorities in prison, white privilege and willful amnesia. All wrapped up in a stunning ghost story. All the various hauntings we experience dealt with brilliantly. And to have the author read the novel is just wonderful. thank you.

The Sentance was an interesting book
I didn’t know what to expect. This mwas highly recommended by a good friend and I must confess that I was a bit confused in the beginning. It all began to make sense, however. The characters were well developed and I took a keen interest in all of them. The main premise of the story really made me think and was extremely informative as well. It was well read by the author. I felt it flagged a bit at the end. I do think it’s worth a listen and would recommend it.

Beautiful!
When it's done well, author narration can really help bring the story to life, knowing the characters from the inside as only an author really can. This is something Erdrich definitely achieves.
I was worried that the plot might be too harrowing, but Erdrich walks a delicate line between describing the challenges her characters face, without being an angel of doom.
Her style is beautifully lyrical with shots of well-observed humour that had me laughing. I didn't want it to end.
I recommend this book to anyone and everyone!
