About this listen

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Good Sister and The Mother-in-Law with new novel Darling Girls out soon.

In a family of midwives, some secrets are too big to keep hidden ...

Neva Bradley, a third-generation midwife, is determined to keep the details surrounding her own pregnancy - including the identity of the baby's father - hidden from her family and co-workers for as long as possible.
Her mother, Grace, cannot let this secret rest, even while her own life begins to crumble around her.

For Floss, Neva's grandmother and a retired midwife, Neva's situation thrusts her back 60 years in time to a secret that eerily mirrors her granddaughter's - a secret which, if revealed, will have life-changing consequences for them all.

"This is women's fiction at its finest...a wonderfully satisfying story...touching, tender, and meticulously researched." (Liane Moriarty, author of Big Little Lies and The Husband's Secret)

"Enchanting...Hepworth's skilful storytelling means past and present flow seamlessly...it's easy to lose yourself in the lives of the three, strong female protagonists." (Daily Telegraph)

"Hepworth illuminates one of the most important moments in a woman's life - when she becomes a mother - and spins a story that will hold you captivated until the end." (Emily Giffin, author of The One and Only)

Sweet baby story but the readers voice almost made me turn it off... high pitched, saccharine, unrealistic .

Sentimental story... but we all love babies

Great storyline but the narration made it very hard to persist through. Took away from the story and feel like it would have been more enjoyable to read as a paperback. Love all of Sally’s books and this was no different!

Narrator made me nearly stop listening

The story was good, predictable and occasionally frustrating, but the narration was really distracting. The voice of Neva sounded like a fake small child voice and the whole thing was really off putting and hard to enjoy. It took from enjoying the story. I think if I had read the book instead it would have been far more enjoyable. Disappointed.

Really distracting narration

If I had of sampled this before purchasing I wouldn’t have gone ahead. For me as an Aussie woman and mother I most enjoy Sally’s stories because they feel warm, familiar and relatable, and the narrators are excellent. Once starting this I could not deal with the horrible whiny voice of Neva. It sounds like an adult pretending to be a toddler. Super annoying and it tainted the character. I was also surprised it wasn’t an Australian story. I actually couldn’t bear to listen and had to stop for a few days. I tried again and after pushing through, I got used to the whiney baby voice and managed to get through the story. I did enjoy the storyline, but I think it would have been amazing if it had a similar setting to Sally’s other stories (although this wouldn’t have fit the blizzard) And definitely a different narrator!

Different for Sally Hepworth

Cute enough plot but the narration is distractingly awful. Whiny, babyish voice. Please sample before purchasing

I’ve been wanting to do a Sally Hepworth for a while and figured I should start at the beginning. Read it in just over a day! It’s a lovely and compelling story and I love hearing more about midwives and the amazing things they can do!

My first Sally! Lovely read, especially for midwives!

I could not stand the voice of the narrator. The voice made the female characters seem pathetic, insipid and childlike- totally distracted from the story. I ended up ditching the audible version and just reading the novel. The story itself was thoroughly enjoyable.
