Brought this book, but the audio is another story entirely.

Don’t buy this book if you are wanting to read the Harley Merlin series. The actual audio is for a completely different book and series. Disappointed, especially because I can’t find the legimate version.

Overall A Solid Listen

Overall the book is what you really expect going in from a YA book, the performance by the voice over makes listening to it an enjoyable experience. It set's things up for what seems to be turning into a fairly long series for something in this format.

Not Harry Potter but great book

One of the things I’ve noticed regarding the reviews about this book is that many people thought it was going to be another Harry Potter. I think that was an unfair characterization, I believe this book should be allowed to stand on its own merits. In my opinion, the story is engaging, filled with drama and intrigue. The main character is filled with fire always ready to defend her family and friends. So, I hope the people who wrote a review would please set aside their Harry Potter impressions and please give this story another look because it is well worth the buy.

I liked it

I got a little annoyed with the lack of common sense connections that were being made way too slowly almost unrealistically slow. but enjoyed the story and am loving this series.

Has potential, but a tough listen

There are some interesting elements to the book, However, I don't think if it knows whether or not it wants to be a children's book. I am guessing the sweet spot is teens. I was a Harry Potter fan and the sheer creativity allowed me to escape into innocence. This book does not quite make it, seeming a bit formulaic. There are a few other issues that prevented me from suspending disbelief:

The main character is an empath. Which is an interesting way to illustrate the emotional content of the characters. But the author uses this as a crutch and doesn't provide enough direct plot. The book would be better if the characters, settings, and character interactions told the story which I could interpret, allowing me to suspend my disbelief and enter the story. However, there is so much inner monolog with a given character telling me what I am supposed to see and feel that I never get a chance to engage the material. And if the author has chosen to really expose the emotional content of the characters, they need to be full characters. It seems to me that most of them barely break the surface of archetype.

The book uses the term magical repeatedly to differentiate those with magic and those with out. After the first couple of pages I understand that there are people who have magic. It would be akin to me using the term human in every other sentence. Unless I am specifically discussing aspects of the human race or the human condition, I don't use the word. It is unnecessary.

Similarly, there is another device in the book, an item which focuses magical power, called an espree (sp?). The book constantly mentions them, but they do little to advance the plot. They are completely unnecessary. I feel the books would be better with out them. They just seem awkward.

Anyway, I might give the next book a try to see if things have matured. There is some potentially interesting lore here, but I am guessing I will move on. This is just my two cents obviously. I certainly can't write fiction, but I have an opinion. And you know what they say about those.

Don't buy it yet

There are 6 books to this series - there are only the first four on audible. So if you get hooked, you will be very disappointed you cannot get all 6. Audible, you want to purchase the first two thirds of my car?

NOT HARRY POTTER

I was fooled by the hype on Facebook. This is nothing like Harry Potter. I only finished it hoping it would have a good ending. The end leaves you hanging and I don't care enough to find out what happens in the sequels.

This was great in audible!

This series continues to entertain! It is a great way to take a ride into a fantasy world without ever leaving you chair! Cheers for an author who can provide adventure without disgusting filth and just enough gore to please the senses without causing the reader to be too grossed out! FUN!

Interesting story

Facebook would come up with this series comparing it to Harry Potter series. I will start by saying that the series should not and cannot be compared to the HP series they are different and interesting within their own right! What I will say for anyone wondering about the differences within the series: JKRoling creates the wording world and this series focuses more on the mystery part of it all! the story introduces us to The manor and how the world within the mannor itself but so far not beyond it like The Harry Potter Series. That is that all I will say for anyone who expects another style of HP series! Yes though as the story suggests there is manic involved.
The Secret of Spellshadow Manor so far is that if a mystery about why all of the events happen. It is the reason why the reader/listener keeps going to get the answers along with Alex. The story does focus on the thoughts of Alex and the actions of getting home as well getting answers about the mannor.
I enjoyed the story and the narrator did a great job!

Enjoyable listen

Entertaining. So good to find a new series of books that are easy to listen to, good narration, and the story continues to develop. Biggest disappointment, why hasn’t audible got the rest of the series recorded yet!? I know amazon have them in book and kindle format but it’s not the same as being able to listen whenever I want. Come on Audible, catch up! Please.

I absolutely love the girl who dares to think series so assumed this would be just as good. wrong.... Really sad I spent a credit on this. Characters are dull and forgettable, story is just plain boring.

Underdeveloped....

I did not enjoy this audiobook. The characters were under developed as was the storyline. There were parts of the plot that were just not explained and it was all just a bit underwhelming. I will not be reading any other books in the series.
