Publisher's Summary

England, 1959. Laurel Nicolson is 16 years old, dreaming alone in her childhood tree house during a family celebration at their home, Green Acres Farm. She spies a stranger coming up the long road to the farm and then observes her mother, Dorothy, speaking to him. And then she witnesses a crime.

Fifty years later, Laurel is a successful and well-regarded actress, living in London. She returns to Green Acres for Dorothy’s ninetieth birthday and finds herself overwhelmed by memories and questions she has not thought about for decades. She decides to find out the truth about the events of that summer day and lay to rest her own feelings of guilt. One photograph, of her mother and a woman Laurel has never met, called Vivian, is her first clue.

The Secret Keeper explores longings and dreams, the lengths some people go to fulfill them, and the strange consequences they sometimes have. It is a story of lovers, friends, dreamers and schemers, play-acting and deception, told against a backdrop of events that changed the world.

Excellent - Ripping Yarn ..

Any additional comments?

I had this on my wish list because I thought it was an English historical novel and it kept coming up with my previous searches ... I bought it and proceeded to loose it in my Library as I migrated to the New version of The Audible App.

Anyway what a surprise - I was slowly drawn in to the intrigue of the characters, the dialogue, the movements in time and the mystery was so well unravelled.

The only thing I would say is that it was a bit too convenient that certain people from long ago kept journals that could be discovered by Lol & Jerry but hey - the joys of fiction !!

I then started researching who this Kate Morton was expecting some English author, and discovered she practically a neighbour here in Brisbane.I'm now eager to read another hmmm will it be the the House at Riverton or perhaps The Shifting Fog ??

I have come away emotional after reading this brilliant story. Kate Morton has painted a vivid illustration with her words and I believe this is her best story I have read. Thank you Kate for your wonderful story telling.

Incredible story, terrible accents

Kate Morton's writing in The Secret Keeper was absolutely excellent. If the story itself wasn't so captivating, I would have stopped listening because although the reader has a beautiful tone to her voice, her accents (apart from Australian) were so bad. From chapter to chapter, the character voices tended to change, and accents would alter confusingly so I kept having to rewind and relisten to ensure I understood which character was speaking. They really should've chosen someone who could perform the array of accents accurately. The voices of Jimmy and Dolly were particularly hard to listen to. But I would 100% recommend this book to read instead of to listen to! The Secret Keeper was full of twists and turns and so well written.

Pleasure & pain

The pleasure and pain came with an enjoyable (untaxing) story, with narrative elements expressive, but blighted yet again by Caroline Lee’s appalling attempts at regional English accents (I assume that’s what they were).

Liked the story but

Found the narration clumsy and annoying, The characters seemed to lose their substance in the process.
