Publisher's Summary

Read by actress, singer, blogger and author Carrie Hope Fletcher, Frances Hodgson Burnett’s delightful novel The Secret Garden is given new life. Delve in to the tranquil world of Burnett’s story as you follow the journey of her young protagonist, Mary Lennox, on her journey through her childhood. First published in 1911, the novel is a much-cited ‘classic’ of English children’s literature. It is, however, as much for adults as for anyone else. An uplifting and light-hearted listen, this is the ideal summer escape.

Mary Lennox starts her life as an unhappy victim of circumstance. After the loss of her parents, she moves to rural Yorkshire to live with a distant uncle where she resents the wildness of the countryside. At first, she struggles to find a place in this new existence. Although unsure about her surroundings and its occupants, through the gentle guidance of the maid she gradually becomes interested in the story of Mrs Craven who apparently used to spend her time in a garden at the house, the key to which has vanished. Mary makes it her quest to find and explore the possibilities it holds. Her journey sees her change, befriending a host of loveable characters as the garden begins to cast its spell on her.

About the author

Born in 1849, Burnett moved to America in 1865 where she would live, on and off, for the rest of her life. She was well travelled, living in Paris for a few years before buying a house in England (where she wrote The Secret Garden) and finally moving to New York. She is best known for her children’s novels such as Little Lord Fauntleroy and A Little Princess but was also a prodigious writer of adult fiction. It is this, which perhaps explains how she was able to merge and cater for both audiences with such success in The Secret Garden

Fabulous

I have loved this book since I was small. My Mum and Grandma both read it to me I was enthralled. I read it to my children, I’ve read it to my granddaughters. I still feel the magic when I hear the words, this recording took me back to my long ago childhood. Totally loved this recording. Highly recommended.

But for that "hilarious" domestic abuse scene....

I enjoyed this book right up until everyone was busting a gut when the gardener tells the story of how some villager's wife "made him beat her" because she called him a drunk. That part definitely did NOT age well in this otherwise delightful book.

One of the classics that I would re-read over and over.

I believe people of all ages should read this book. The first time I read this book, I was 14 years old. I was in the hospital at the time when my teacher introduced me to this novel. I fell in love with it right away. This novel gave me courage to fight the pain I was dealing with at the time. I dream of finding a secret garden of my own one day. Love the narrator, she did a fantastic job.

Beautiful

This is such a wonderful book. It is about a special kind of Magic that brings things to life. It is sbout growing up and children’s imagination and way to see the world as the magical place that it actually is.

Carrie Hope Fletcher did wonderful job by giving her voice to Mary, Dickon, Colin and all the others. Her narration is just wonderful and it is such a pleasure to listen to her voice.
It was a real joy to listen to this book and I strongly recommend it.

I watched the movie but, as always, the book is better :) Also, I love the accent of the narrator, it brings the story to life! What a sweet story this was, I wish I would've listened to/read it sooner!

Great performance of a children's classic

I have always loved this story and a great performance enhanced the experience. Reader did an excellent job with the children's voices and accents. Haughty Mary was played perfectly. Loved this interpretation.

Really, really enjoyed this book!

It was so wonderful revisiting a book I remembered from my youth! The story took me far away from daily concerns and cares. I have listened to it twice and will keep it in mind when I need to escape daily frustrations!

So glad I revisited this book from my childhood!

So glad I revisited this book from my childhood! I loved it even more than I remembered. The idea behind the magic of positive thinking is something that we need to be reminded of more often. I have started listening to this anytime I need a pallet cleanser from the heavier content that I love but sometimes gets to me and I just need a safe light hearted pick me up. Narration is good.

Shame about the audio

This was one of my favourite books as a child so I was excited about being able to listen to this. However I am having to return it as the audio is driving me mad. It's as though the narrator is moving around as it was recorded; sometimes she is further from the microphone so it sounds too quiet, then all of a sudden it gets loud again. It doesn't make for a comfortable listening experience.

Lovely story shame about the accent

The book starts well the narrator has a lovely clear voice, however, the terrible Yorkshire accent and the misplaced ‘t’s drove me crazy. Book returned, shame.

Volume goes up and down

I love everything about this audiobook apart from the irritating volume issue, sounds as though the narrator rocks back and forth to the microphone. I am sensitive to sound so perhaps its just me.

Unfortunate accent issues. Otherwise brilliant!

A wonderful classic, generally read very well by the narrator. What a shame that the narration was marred by the awkward over pronunciation of the Yorkshire T'. Has she never heard of a Glottal Stop?!

Lovely story, frustrating accents!

I love this story and the production is good. The story is read well, but as a Yorkshire woman the over exaggerated 't'-ing made it a little frustrating! Just not how we talk!

A great story, badly read

I find the Narrator's Yorkshire accent hilarious. That's a good job, otherwise it would have driven me mad! And that it's such a great story.Surely someone should have told her that the t in t'book should NOT be pronounced!

Simply lovely.

The magic of the secret garden, of getting well, of living, of childhood, of Yorkshire, of good food, of fresh air, of good mothering. Feel good book. A spiritual metaphor. Beautifully narrated.
