Publisher's Summary

Churchill's history of the Second World War is, and will remain, the definitive work. Lucid, dramatic, remarkable for its breadth and sweep and for its sense of personal involvement, it is universally acknowledged as a magnificent reconstruction. Please note: This book was originally published in six volumes:

1.The Gathering Storm
2. Their Finest Hour
3. The Grand Alliance
4. The Hinge of Fate
5. Closing the Ring
6. Triumph and Tragedy

Churchill then condensed these into four volumes, which have since been released as one, rather hefty, publication. Audible has published the unabridged recordings of Churchill's condensed volume, divided into four parts, as follows:

1.Milestone to Disaster
2.Alone
3.The Grand Alliance
4.Triumph and Tragedy

This one needs to be read

Based on Churchills account, this war was totally avoidable. The politicians were too busy being ideological. I can't understand why we are not all speaking German and Japanese. The narration is faultless and easy on the ears. The story told give us a great insight into the mindset of the time .

Wonderful read!

Again as with the "The World Crisis" books, Churchill's telling of the origins of WWII is detailed, exceptionally written and magnificently told by Christian Rodska. Thoroughly enjoyed this 1st volume. Will be getting straight into the next volume!

Superbly written masterwork

'Milestones to Disaster' is a superbly written detailed explanation of the events leading up to the commencement of World War II. It outlines the sequence of mistakes that led to Hitler's uninterrupted rise and concludes with the early scuffles, notably the Battle of Narvik and Churchill's appointment to the post of Prime Minister and leader of a War Cabinet.

The narration by Christian Rodska is excellent, though one does raise a wry smile at his attempt to mimic Churchill's oft-imitated speech patterns occasionally. As a record of history, this is a masterwork. It is told with frank honesty and in the free-flowing style of an epic tale, which it certainly is.

I very much look forward to listening to the remaining three books.

Fantastic perspective

I find WW1 and WW2 a difficult deluge of facts, formations and figures, which make the whole thing difficult to grasp. This text, which is from Churchill's perspective and written in a lovely style, offers a Point Of View, where you can put yourself in his shoes without getting lost in the mammoth details history books often do.

In this book 1, he gives himself a pass on many things and is constantly correct and heroic. So, a grain of salt is in order.

Great performance.
