Publisher's Summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Second Sino-Japanese War, then pay attention...

Many people in the West look upon the Second Sino-Japanese War, which took place in the 1930s and 1940s, as a sort of sideshow to the larger Second World War, but there is no separating the two. Imagine the Pacific War - the theater of World War II that took place in the Pacific.

If the Japanese were not busy fighting on another front, they would have had millions of more troops available to fight the Americans and the British. In all likelihood, World War II would have ended the same way, but it would have taken much longer and cost that many more lives.

To understand the conflict between these two Asian powers, we have to travel back in time quite a ways, for the story of what is known by many as the Second Sino-Japanese War is long and rooted deep in history.

In The Second Sino-Japanese War: A Captivating Guide to Military Conflict That Began Between China and Japan, Including Events Such as the Japanese Invasion of Manchuria and the Nanjing Massacre, you will discover chapters such as:

  • The Roots of the Conflict
  • Japan before the War
  • Manchuria/Manchukuo
  • China Proper
  • Another “Incident”
  • The Opponents
  • The Tragedy of Nanjing
  • They Were Expendable
  • The War Drags On
  • Horrors Mostly Unknown
  • Friends
  • And much, much more!

Good job

The audible tells of time that many will not have learned in in school at any level. It shows how that part of world was at war with itself long before the rise of Hitler in 1933 and the beginning of World War Two. It also gives insight to those countries in regards to current political issues in that region that still reverberates today.

Gives insight about the War and more.

History audibles in schools do not talk about things like the Nanjing Massacre or the hand to hand fighting with machete like weapons in Tai'erzhuang or the Chinese use of suicide vests made out of grenades, waiting until Japanese tanks were close, rolled under or placed themselves in front of the view slits and detonated the vests.

Great

Excellent audible on the Sino-Japanese War. The one thing I've seen about history books is avoiding heinous, evil moments in history like the Nanjing Massacre. It's been refreshing using book sources like these to learn about history even the wicked, vile parts.

Terrible history

There have been terrible periods of time in history and this particular time is one such example. Captivating History has done a great job covering a period that I was not as familiar with. Well presented and well done.

Wow

Comprehensive account of the conflict, from ancient through modern times, clarifying many misconceptions -- especially its status as a major theater of WWII. If you're reading this review, this audible is almost assuredly for you, and will provide you a much deeper knowledge of this tragic era

All-encompassing

These events by the Japanese I considered some of the cruelties in human history . Seems like it was part of their culture which justified it . Just very sad, even the warfare the atrocities committed by one group against another .
Excellent research by Captivating History on adding to the literature of World History!!!Good information

Disappointing

Not a bad primer, but short on a great detail. Narration is well measured but marred by a poorly affected british accent by an American narrator and his lack Of proper pronunciation of a number of subject specific words (Japanese and Chinese names, and military equipment) which undermines the performance and grates on the ear

Not terrible, but not good

Five Stars

This is very much an academic history based on a variety of research done by individuals from the West and Asia. Scholars from China, Japan, and the U.S. cover a wide range of economic, political, social, and military topics. The main conclusion of most seems to be that Japan blundered into a war without a clear set of objectives and which was also a war that could not be won.

I Liked This Audiobook

I liked this audiobook. The loss of this war to Japan, considered part of the Confucian world, had a far larger impact on the Chinese than any previous loss to a western power, such as those experienced during the Opium wars earlier in the 19th century.

Good History Book

Anyone who wants to understand the emergence of Japan as a power in the Far East should read this. There are few other available books in English on this. The extensive bibliography attests to the scholarship of this work.

Very Good

Paine has done an excellent job on a topic that is important yet almost arcane. Using numerous newspaper accounts as no other sources are available does not weaken the work, but strengthens it insofar as it provides perspectives from multiple observers, especially Russia, France, England and the US none of whom were strictly speaking participating in the conflict.

Good Explanation

The book explains, in great detail, how Europe, America, and Asia reacted to the war - how it not only changed perceptions but also foreign policy.
