The author took me on unexpected journey through the varied and complex layers of French society before, during and after the French Revolution. It is not often that an author can make real internal complexity, the humanity, of each character and leave the reader reflecting on the motivations, experiences and perspectives of each. I find myself reflecting not only on the central characters but perhaps even more so on the small players.
