THE SUNDAY TIMES CRIME NOVEL OF THE YEAR 2023
________

Private Detective Cormoran Strike is contacted by a worried father whose son, Will, has gone to join a religious cult in the depths of the Norfolk countryside.

The Universal Humanitarian Church is, on the surface, a peaceable organisation that campaigns for a better world. Yet Strike discovers that beneath the surface there are deeply sinister undertones, and unexplained deaths.

In order to try to rescue Will, Strike's business partner Robin Ellacott decides to infiltrate the cult and she travels to Norfolk to live incognito amongst them. But in doing so, she is unprepared for the dangers that await her there or for the toll it will take on her . . .

Utterly page-turning, The Running Grave moves Strike and Robin's story forward in the epic, unforgettable seventh instalment of the series.

I feel like I definitely noticed an improvement between this book and the last, with the characters finally truly moving towards life as we know it in 2023. It was less over-explained than the tech heavy “the ink black heart” and by trying less it was so much more. The same themes that we know and love from the strike series, the same huge tangle of threads to unpick, but the detectives all had some growth and I was so onboard for the whole thing. Performance was spot on, consistent with the rest of the series.

The perfect new instalment

The Ink Black Heart was a low point in the series but this book is simply brilliant. A long book but goes along at a good tempo with many layers to Strike’s life involved. Impeccably read as well. Superb experience for the listener.

Great comeback!!

One of the very best series I have ever read. Gripping and obsessive and genius.

Could not put down

I love this -- works far better than book 6 as an audiobook and is more engrossing.

i disagree with those who find it overlong. To me, part of the delight is the full 34 hrs. JKR/RG is a writer who creates worlds in which we become absorbed. Sure you could lose the details of staff shifts from a literary point of view but i want to dwell in this world for as long as possible.

Thought the Corm-Robin unrequited love story might run out of steam but it's well handled here.

Glorious -- and not a page too long!

Great story. Topical. Superbly read. Detailed Reality. Characters so real. Love the “dance” between Robin and Strike.

Strike at his best
