Story
The characters in Samanta Schweblin's wildly imaginative new novel, Little Eyes, reveal the beauty of connection between far-flung souls but they also expose the ugly truth of our increasingly linked world. Trusting strangers can lead to unexpected love, playful encounters and marvellous adventures, but what if it can also pave the way for unimaginable terror? Schweblin has created a dark and complex world that is both familiar but also strangely unsettling, because it's our present and we're living it - we just don't know it yet.
Publisher's Summary
In their world, telling the truth has become the most dangerous crime of all.
In the near-future United States, a one-child policy is ruthlessly enforced. Everyone follows the Rule of One. But Ava Goodwin, daughter of the head of the Texas Family Planning Division, has a secret - one her mother died to keep and her father has helped to hide for her entire life.
She has an identical twin sister, Mira.
For eighteen years Ava and Mira have lived as one, trading places day after day, maintaining an interchangeable existence down to the most telling detail. But when their charade is exposed, their worst nightmare begins. Now they must leave behind the father they love and fight for their lives.
Branded as traitors, hunted as fugitives, and pushed to discover just how far they’ll go in order to stay alive, Ava and Mira rush headlong into a terrifying unknown.

Fantastic premise, tired plot.
This book rips its premise from the headlines of the future. It's got climate change, overpopulation, immigration issues, ridgid social classes patriarchal dictatorships and strong female characters who have to navigate a brutal journey to revive a rebellion. I know they're planning on a sequel based on the cliffhanger ending, but I will probably stop after this one. Let me explain...
This is similar to What Happened to Monday because of the necessity to pull off the old "more than one person as the embodiment of only one person or the bad govt will kill us" and our mother is dead but our father is brilliant. Also, the nasty business of climate change has also increased the gap between the wealthy and the poor and climbing the ladder of social status isn't a reality for the majority. Also, everyone has a microchip so forget about lying about who you are. If you get away with it, you'll have to live like an animal since the government controls everything by constantly scanning microchips.
I wanted more from the characters. The evil doers in this book are just evil without any shades of gray and without any cool back story about why they are evil. Readers have to swallow it like they'd swallow saltiness crackers without milk or water. Shut up and suffer with your questions, readers...
The grandmother in this book reminded me of Sarah Conner in a Terminator sequel and the main characters have to shed their naivety and become the bad a$$es they've always been deep down. I wanted to love it, but at 75% through, I already knew how it would end. If you love YA distopia, this might be your bag, but for the rest of us who loved 1984 and the Handmaid's Tale, you might be sad that so much plot potential didn't provide a fresh execution. I would give this book a solid "meh" but there is no "meh" scale.

um. what?
Started off strong. Awesome concept. But the author lost me in the last 3rd. Suddenly things move at a breakneck pace, impossiblely unrealistic. Characters happen by their goals with unexplained ease. Strange plot twists take place with no explanation. Key individuals withhold information for no real reason... except to be mysterious and confuse the storyline. Several enter the story, start to develop, then quickly take a bow and leave. Sequels? But now I'm not sure I care for their evolution as they were so abruptly discarded. And the ending? The biggest fantasy of all. Without spoiling for those who haven't read ... just too much to swallow. Not for me. As for Audible, narration was good.

Stuck in the middle
I'm on the fence with this book. I like the premise, but between the "similiar voice" for both Ava and Mira, the build-up from the beginning only to quickly end, and the immaturity that screamed YA, I'm not sure if I'll bother with followup. Without spoiling anything I will admit that it is a decent book, but perhaps just not for me.

it was good.
It was good is the worse complement someone can give a book. It was middle of the road. Unfortunately, that is what comes to mind after reading (listening to) this story.
The premise was fabulous and interesting.
I didn't like the amount of foul language.
The antagonist that starts the whole problem was weak. His grandfather overshadowed him always.
I don't feel the author addressed the arguement between the twins. It just was gone, disappeared because of the terrible things they faced alone. Yet, the arguement was solid and well founded. It needed to be addressed.
However, the story itself was interesting and the author weaved a fun tale. So... it was good.

Such a waste of time
It is rare that I do not enjoy an audio book, but I finished this audio book more out of obligation and a sense of duty to see it through, and less out of interest. A plodding plot. Sigh.

Powerful
I read the book “1984” as a youth. It seemed far-fetched. It was not. Therefore, this book, which seems far-fetched to me now, makes me worry for our future. This is the first time I’ve ever listened to a audiobook. I believe I got more out of it this way, as the narrator was wonderfully able to switch voices so that I could follow who was speaking when. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Freedom Must Be Earned
Good pace. Engaging. Interesting characters. A socially relevant and significant theme. Good prose. The plot leans a little too much on technique. But the payoff is a well paced story. The novel is about twins pretending to be one person in a future U.S. where only one child is allowed by law. America is a military state because the people chose safety over freedom.

It was a little difficult to engage at the beginning, but with a little patience, the story draws you in and you're hooked. I was devastated to realize this was only a first installment of a series and I have to wait to see where Ava and Mira will head next with their revolution.
