Publisher's Summary
Will is small for his age, but agile and energetic. All his life, he has dreamed of becoming a great knight like the father he never knew, so he is devastated when he is rejected as an apprentice to Castle Redmont's Battleschool. Instead he is apprenticed to Halt, the mysterious Ranger whose uncanny ability to move unseen is thought to be the result of black magic. Reluctantly, Will learns to use a Ranger's secret weapons: a bow and arrow, a mottled cloak and a stubborn little pony. It may not be the sword and battlehorse he longs for, but when Will and Halt set out on a desperate mission to prevent the assassination of the King, Will finds that a Ranger's weapons are not so useless after all....

Ranger's Apprentice
What did you like most about The Ruins of Gorlan?
No matter how many times I read this it draws me in. The story flows well. The characters are well developed. II's for a young audience but well written enough to grab anyone of any age.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Halt was an interesting character. He has more heart than he shows. Halt doesn't really say much and because of this when he does speack it means a lot. John Flanagan and William Zappa executed the emotions perfectly in my opinion.
What about William Zappa’s performance did you like?
William Zappa's performance was very good, very natural
Any additional comments?
The book starts slow, introducing all the characters, building the plot. You seem to land in the middle before you realise it.

Wonderful book
This book has captured my mind, I had first heard it read aloud in a primary school class, however never was able to finish it. I am glad I did as it’s story and narrator seemed to paint the finest picture in my minds eye
The book itself does seem to be targeted towards the age group of myself first hearing it in primary school so I would recommend it to anyone that age... or even above.

I had been seeing this book a few times while out and about in charity shops. So when it came on sale on Audible, I thought why not? So gave it ago and then ended up buying the second book and the third book… So yeah.
You see them grow as people as well as skilled traders. Whether it be a cook to a knight in training. You see a range of different trades. It was great to see the message that you don’t have to be a knight to be a warrior. Warriors come in all different sizes and shapes. It’s what’s in the inside that matters.

Safe and familiar fare
A simple enough story of a young hero finding his path. A nice, safe introduction for young readers to the fantasy genre, the characters, society and moral values are all familiar and conservative in a 1950’s Middle American sort of way. The plot has no real surprises and the world building is almost nonexistent - the usual medieval Europe trappings pasted onto post-Colonial American flora and fauna, with no mind paid to odd anachronistic references to light switches, refrigeration and non-alcoholic ginger beer - things the target reader would be familiar with, but a bit immersion-wrecking for more experienced readers. The author also periodically slips into head-hopping, with POVs switching about unexpectedly mid-conversation. The book is slow to get going, but the unskilled writing doesn’t detract from an engaging tale with lots of likeable characters.
