Publisher's Summary

The future of democracy is uncertain.

Populist world leaders are dominating headlines and creating a new kind of politics that challenges democratic values and the liberal order.

They influence the media, exert economic power, appoint judges, cultivate populism and seek to undermine the very institutions which brought them into power.

In this gripping narrative, Misha Glenny, journalist and best-selling author of McMafia, tells the stories of six strongmen’s unexpected rise.

to much bias

would have been really good if has been so over the top biased. some really interesting stuff and learnt a lot. often they were clearly grasping at straws, particularly Mohdi and Borris

Biased

It's a bit of a stretch to compare some of these leaders in my opinion. It also seems like he attributes the worst possible motives for anyone rather than taking an objective look at things.

Good Summary!

I'm surprised how much I liked the series. It's a bit of background about 6 current world leaders who have been classified as 'Iron Men' by the author. Originally, I hadn't read the description and I thought it was going to be about extreme athletes but it wasn't.

I love podcasts and had been hearing about these men over the course of the pandemic, so this was really interesting and helpful to get some background on what made them so powerful and start to explain their unexpected rises to power!

Putting Boris alongside this lot ?

Interesting and thought provoking but whatever your politics linking boris Johnson with know killers and dictators Is a bit far fetched to say the least. You may not like Boris, and I’m not a huge fan, but putting him alongside these guys is just silly headline grabbing and let’s down the whole series

Should be mandatory listening

A well researched and comprehensive yet succinct and easy listen that clearly maps out how we ended up in this mess thanks to a handful of selfish power-hungry men worldwide. It's also indirectly a a pretty damning critique of the patriarchy.

It is of course a bit depressing too - Proof positive that the general populace worldwide are so easily duped.

Unlike another reviewer I think the choice of including Boris Johnson is perfectly correct, showing how he and Cummings are using the same tools and methods of more "obvious" dictators to achieve the same ultimate results.

We live in interesting times indeed.

Very deceptive and dangerous. EXTREME BIAS

As a history enthusiast I delve into more than just the mainstream narrative as I encourage you also to do. This book was clearly written with and extreme bias in mind and agenda, not only has the author placed an embarrasing yet not evil man such as boris Johnson alongside psychopaths and dictators but has left out major key historical events of violence in order to push the narrative in her favour.

There are also sly digs at men in general, hinting that woman could do a better job. Let's all be honest here, woman and men are all equal and can do as they wish in life, but to write a book which is suppose to be informative and then trying to push your own personal beliefs and agenda into it is very immature and shows a lack of intelligence.

I would encourage everyone to do your own research on who sorros really is and what he really stands for, do an unfiltered YouTube or Google search. Educate yourself deeply before taking any mainstream news as truth.

Have a wonderful day and God Bless you!

Great work but undermined by bias.

Well delivered and insightful providing intriguing snapshots on controversial figures who shape our world. However, uncomfortably biased in the final episode making rather difficult connections between mass murderers and UK PM. Sexist undertones detract from the critical analysis offered by contributors. However, would highly recommend.

Only Tells one side of the story.

Dont see why they snidely try to put people like The PM of UK and Presdint of the USA into it.

Full of Bias

Very one sided, a disservice to an important and interesting topic. Unfortunate work, a missed opportunity to do something worthwhile.

Extreme bias against present U.K. government.

Listeners need to be aware that towards the end of this series there is extreme bias against the present U.K. prime minster.

Entertaining read

Like many others, I can see a quote obvious bias and wine dubious connections. None the less there are some very valid points and it makes for an entertaining listen but not, perhaps, a historical accurate study.

Left wing propaganda

A wonderful and entertaining insight into how political figures are shaping the current world. Fantastic to see the emphasis on other politicians and not just Trump. Disappointing to see some wild and weak links to serious political issues. Still really worth the listen and motivation to do your own deep-dive on some of these politicians.
