The CEO of The Walt Disney Company shares the ideas and values he has used to reinvent one of the most beloved companies in the world, and inspire the people who bring the magic to life.

In 2005, Robert Iger became CEO of The Walt Disney Company during a difficult time. Morale had deteriorated, competition was more intense, and technology was changing faster than at any time in the company's history. "I knew there was nothing to be gained from arguing over the past," Iger writes. "The only thing that mattered was the future, and I believed I had a clear idea of the direction Disney needed to go." It came down to three clear ideas:

  1. Create the highest quality content Disney could produce.
  2. Embrace and adopt technology instead of fighting it.
  3. Think bigger - think global - and turn Disney into a stronger brand in international markets.

Twelve years later, Disney is the largest, most respected media company in the world counting Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 21st Century Fox among its properties. Its value is nearly five times what it was when Iger took over, and Iger is recognised as one of the most innovative and successful CEOs of our time.

Now, he's sharing the lessons he's learned while running Disney and leading its 200,000 employees - taking big risks in the face of historic disruption; learning to inspire the people who work for you; leading with fairness and communicating principles clearly. This book is about the relentless curiosity that has driven Iger for 45 years, since the day he started as a studio supervisor at ABC. It's also about thoughtfulness and respect, and a decency-over-dollars approach that has become the bedrock of every project and partnership Iger pursues, from a deep friendship with Steve Jobs in his final years to an abiding love of the evolving Star Wars myth.

"Over the past 14 years, I think I've learned so much about what real leadership is," Iger writes. "But I couldn't have articulated all of this until I lived it. You can't fake it - and that's one of the key lessons in this book."

great story of an ordinary mans rise to the top

the one thing i could've used more of was a slightly deeper analysis of the creative process and what makes separates good creative decisions from the bad ones.

Great look behind the curtain

I really liked this one. Quite different from other leadership/business books. Tangible insights and advice. A very interesting peek behind the curtain of the effort and process of landing a big wig job. The first chapter was incredible. Unexpectedly heart breaking. Really enjoyed this

Awesome Insights on Creative Leadership

I loved hearing Bob’s stories from his career experiences and the leadership lessons he learned along the way. Fascinating having read Creativity Inc. and Steve Jobs to see how all the different perspectives intersect. A really enjoyable read with many many leadership lessons I can apply to my own story :)

Sopresivo

Me sorprendió cómo comentó sobre experiencias que hacían referencia a la vida privada de otros. Quizá fueron eventos públicos, ojalá que haya tenido el consentimiento de los mencionados.

Interesting listen!

I'm a business and Disney fan so the book kept me entertained throughout. It's a very easy listen. I was expecting more explicit business lessons (which are summed up in the appendix BTW) but you had to listen out for the implicit lessons along the way. Really enjoyed it overall.

One to listen to again

This is a great book, with countless insights shared through the stories which formed those lessons. it's both an inspirational book, and one which encourages you to remain grounded. I've listened to this book in short bursts whilst traveling to and from work. Some occasions this works best especially when the content is quite heavy with insights and wonderful tips, whilst at others there's a complex story to be told.

One of the greatest things I like about this book is the humanity shared within. It's not about profits but about doing the right thing and being there for people when they need it.

I will be listening to the book again in the future, probably with pen in hand to take some notes on some of the wonderful insights from a man who's built himself an amazing career, and doesn't take the support he's had from others for granted.

So much better than I’d imagined

I expected this to be a difficult book to listen to. A flattering autobiography. It wasn’t. If you are interested in the people shaping the media landscape, this is highly recommended.

Disney Dealings

This isn't really a biography of Bob Iger but more about his business life. If you want to know more about his personal life you wont get it here. What you will get is an interesting look at how business deals are dealt and how Disney came about buying companies like Lucasfilm, Marvel and Pixar.

Compelling listen and fascinating insight

First audio book and what a listen. One of the few books which actually gives practical advice whilst telling a great story. No padding it went straight into the detail. Only ask would have been to hear the author narrate throughout.

Loved it

Wow, what a great book.
Listened to it in one go which is very rare. Listen if you want to hear about Disney’s biggest acquisitions (Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilms, Fox), lessons on leadership and get an insight into the entertainment business in the US.
