About this listen

A local legend gone haywire.

A small-town cop.

An impossible eyewitness testimony.

Which is easier to believe—that killer mermaids exist, or that one person is worth risking everything for?

For fans of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Into the Drowning Deep comes a chilling horror story steeped in urban rumor.

I am a big fan of the killer mermaids concept and so I was excited about this book. Unfortunately, this story sucked. The characters acted ridiculously - killer mermaids are swimming around waiting to kill them and they decide that the most important thing at this moment is for them to declare their unrequited love for each other? Dafuq? Is this book meant for YA audiences, because all the characters acted like children. The moment that almost made me DNF was when the main character makes a "bargain" with the mermaids that if they let the humans go, they will bring the mermaids more humans for the rest of their lives. The mermaids say, "yeah, sure we agree to that. Off you go home" and the main character internally celebrates like she has already made it home. Girl, why the fuck would they agree to your terms without any leverage to hold you to it? They are clearly tricking you into the water so they can rip you apart like they did to the others. Are the characters meant to be this naive or did the author think this was a realistic exchange and we were supposed to be as shocked as her when the mermaids attack her?

And then there's the EXTREMELY unethical romance between the detective and the witness/suspect, which literally came out of nowhere. WTAF? It wasn't romantic, it wasn't appropriate, and it didn't make any sense for a detective to suddenly ignore ethics, especially for the whiny and unimpressive main character. The fact the detective is interested in her BECAUSE she is weak and vulnerable was the hugest red flag. I am confused as to whether the author intended this to be romantic or actually meant for me to say "Run, girl!" aloud at the MC.

The tone of the book came across too seriously for it to be a piss-take of the genre, so that leaves the options that it is just bad writing. Very disappointing. I wanted something in the vein of Drowning in the Deep. This was certainly not that.

Disappointing
